Four First-Half Goals Lead Bloomsburg to 4-1 Win Over Goldey-Beacom

Box Score BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team used four first half goals to lift it to a 4-1 victory over Goldey-Beacom College Thursday night in a non-conference game at Sports Stadium.

Junior midfielder Fran Miller (Doylestown/Central Bucks East) led the Huskies (8-8-1) with his third multi-goal game of the season with two against the Lightning (4-12).  It was his first multi-goal outing since his pair of goals against Lock Haven on Oct. 6.

Senior forward Bryce Shaffer (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) scored his 28th career goal, moving him into sole possession of fifth place on the Bloomsburg all-time scoring list.

Along with Shaffer, Thursday night's game marked the final home game of fellow seniors John Owens (Jamison/Central Bucks East), Matt Kaupp (Newtown/Archbishop Wood), and Alex Ruhfass (Newtown/Council Rock North)' career.

The Huskies got on the board in the seventh minute on a fantastic hustle play from Miller.  With the ball bouncing high off a deflected pass, Miller leapt up over the entire Goldey-Beacom defensive line and headed the ball into the right side of the net to give Bloomsburg the early lead.

Bloomsburg kept its foot on throttle in the early going and found itself with a couple breakaway opportunities.  After Lightning goalie Ignacio Farias stopped a Shaffer breakaway attempt, forward Chris Pawlowski (Philadelphia/LaSalle) was taken down from behind on an ensuing attack and was awarded a penalty kick in the 23rd minute.  Miller took the shot and scored his second goal of the night.

Freshman midfielder Spencer Conrad (Enola/East Pennsboro) scored a fantastic goal six minutes later in the 29th minute to push the BU lead to three.  Off a free kick pass from Miller, Conrad launched a long shot from outside the box into the upper right corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

The score was Conrad's first in a month since his he had a multi-goal performance against Chestnut Hill on Sept. 25.

Shaffer made the most of his final home game by capitalizing on an opportunity in the final minutes of the first half.  Shaffer was taken down from behind in the 44th minute and scored off a penalty kick for his sixth goal of the year.

The Huskies four goals were tied for the most in a half this season.  It scored four in the second half against Chestnut Hill.

Junior defender Roman Loboda made a big play in the opening half to keep the Lightning off the board.  With a loose ball in front of the Bloomsburg goal, Goldey-Beacom forward Thatcher Howell took a shot on goal but was blocked by Loboda right in front of the goal line.

Bloomsburg junior goalkeeper Ramon Lobo Jr. (Dillsburg/Northern) made two saves in the victory, both coming in the first half.  His defensive line of Owens, Loboda, Anthony Manero (Richboro/Council Rock North), and Matt Zima (Newtown/Council Rock North) did a great job of controlling the ball on the back line and breaking up most of the Lightning's attacks throughout the game.  Lobo Jr. improved his season record to 5-4 in helping the Huskies snap their two-game skid.

Goldey-Beacom got on the board in the 60th minute off a long goal from Matt Bik, chipping it over the BU goalkeeper's head.  Farias closed the game with 11 saves in net for the Lightning.

Bloomsburg closes out its season this weekend with a road contest at East Stroudsburg.  Game time on Saturday, Oct. 27 is set for 5 p.m.
