BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team opened its 2012-13 home season falling to 21st-ranked Lehigh University, 18-12, on Saturday afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks scored wins in six of the seven first seven bouts with five of the six bouts decided by three points or less. Bloomsburg's lone win came at 133 pounds where
Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) scored a 6-1 decision over Laike Gardner.
The Huskies closed out the match winning the final three bouts, including win by two of its ranked wrestlers,
Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) (197) and
Justin Grant (Easton/Easton) (285). Perry scored a 7-3 win, while Grant scored a 3-2 victory.
Bloomsburg, 3-1, will be back in action on Sunday morning travelling to the Palestra in Philadelphia for the Keystone Classic starting at 9 a.m.
Match-By-Match Summary
125— Bloomsburg's
Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks) faced off with Lehigh's Alex Abreu. There was no scoring in the first period. Boylan struck first and earned a 1-0 lead heading into the third. Abreu started down and quickly escaped to tie the score up 1-1. Shortly after, Abreu earned a takedown to advance the lead to 3-1. Boylan shortened the score up with an escape to bring the score to 3-2 with 0:30 seconds left in the match. With riding time, Abreau posted a 4-2 decision.
133- Bloomsburg's
Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central), ranked #17, wrestled Lehigh's Laike Gardner. Wilcox wasted no time in the first by coming out with an early takedown. Wilcox controlled the first and headed into the second period up 2-0. Late in the second period, Wilcox picked up an escape to secure a 3-0 advantage. Wilcox came out strong in the third and picked up another takedown, but Gardner got on the board with an escape. With riding time, Wilcox earned the 6-1 decision.
141- The Huskies
Matt Rappo (Holland/Council Rock South) squared off with Lehigh's #18 ranked Anthony Salupo. There was no scoring in the first period. Rappo scored the first points of the match with an early escape to take the 1-0 lead. In the third, Salupo took down and escaped quickly to tie the match up at 1-1. Soon after, Salupo earned a takedown and controlled majority of the third period to pick up the 4-1 decision with riding time.
149— Bloomsburg's
Josh Roosa (Mountaintop/Crestwood) faced Lehigh's #19 Shane Welsh. Roosa took the first points of the match with a takedown early in the first, but Welsh countered and picked up an escape shortly after. Roosa ended the first ahead 2-1. There was no scoring in the second period. Welsh started down in the beginning of the third and got the escape to tie the score up at 2-2. Both wrestlers made moves to get a takedown in the final seconds, but no points were awarded. With riding time, Welsh picked up the 3-2 decision.
157— Bloomsburg'
Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney), ranked sixth, was taken down with 0:30 seconds left in the first by Lehigh's Joey Napoli. Napoli jumped out of the gates in the second period by picking up an early escape and followed that up with a takedown late in the period to lengthen the lead to 5-0. Napoli went on to control the third period and with riding time, earned the 6-0 decision.
165— Lehigh's Eric Hess, ranked #20, opened the match against Bloomsburg's
Josh Veltre (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) with a takedown just seconds into the period. That would be the only scoring of the first period. In the second period, Veltre started on bottom and quickly tied the score up at 2-2 with a reversal. With 0:33 seconds left in the second, Hess picked up an escape to head into the third period with a 3-2 lead. With just under a minute left in the third, Hess picked up another escape and posted a 4-2 decision.
174— There was no scoring in the first period between Bloomsburg's
Chris Smith (Mineral, Va./Chancelor) and Lehigh's Nathaniel Brown. After a hard fought second period, the match remained scoreless. Later, 40 seconds into the third period, Brown escaped and logged a takedown to lead 3-0. Despite an escape by Smith, Brown would go on with riding time to take the 4-1 decision.
184- Bloomsburg's
Andre Petroski (Glenn Mills/Springfield) faced off with Lehigh's Kevin Bailey. Petroski wasted no time with an early takedown, but Bailey quickly escaped to bring the score to 2-1. The first ended in favor of Petroski in front 2-1. Petroski secured the second period by controlling his 2-1 lead. Petroski picked up an escape to lead 3-1 then later, with riding time, Petroski would go on to win 4-2.
197— Bloomsburg's
Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown), ranked #19, scored first with a takedown over Lehigh's John Bolich. Bolich escaped later in the period to end the first period down 2-1. Perry scored a takedown with 38 seconds left in the second to extend the lead to 4-1. Bolich earned two escapes in the third, but Perry came back strong with his third takedown of the match. With riding time, Perry posted a 7-3 decision over Bolich.
285— #19
Justin Grant (Easton/Easton) of Bloomsburg scored first with a takedown over Lehigh's Jack Delia. Delia picked up an escape and rounded out the first down 2-1. The second consisted of Perry escaping to extend the lead to 3-1. In the third, Delia escaped but it wasn't enough to pick up the win. Grant picked up the 3-2 decision.
