BOX SCORE
BLOOMSBURG—For the first time since 2008 the Bloomsburg University men's tennis team has been crowned PSAC champions. The Huskies defeated three time defending PSAC champs Kutztown, 5-0 to clinch Bloomsburg's 22nd PSAC men's tennis title in school history.
Bloomsburg's
Jeff Nuhfer (Warren/Warren Area) finished the PSAC tournament with a perfect 4-0 record with wins at second doubles and fourth singles. In singles play, he dropped just two games the entire day, winning 24-of-26 games played. For his efforts he was named the tournament's most valuable player.
The Huskies began the conference championship match by sweeping the doubles matches.
Tyler Pultro (New Britain/Central Bucks West) and
Mike DiSanto (Center Valley/Southern Lehigh) registered Bloomsburg's first point of the day as they scored an 8-2 win at third doubles. Soon after,
Ricky Dove (Port Matilda/State College Area) and
Mark Schroeder (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) made it 2-0 as they picked up an 8-2 victory as well at the first spot.
Second doubles combo
Jeff Nuhfer (Warren/Warren Area) and
Lee Wexler (Lafayette Hill/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) had to scrap their way to a win. The duo trailed 5-4 but remained on serve after a hold brought the match to five-all. From there, Nuhfer/Wexler tallied the matches' first break to take their first lead of the match at 6-5. Up a break and with momentum on their side, the Huskies held again and broke to clinch an 8-5 victory.
Entering singles ahead 3-0, the Huskies needed just two wins to earn their first PSAC title in four years.
Jeff Nuhfer (Warren/Warren Area) put Bloomsburg ahead 4-0 as he breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win at fourth singles. With the win, Nuhfer ended his 2012 PSAC tournament with four wins.
Just one point away, all eyes turned to Pultro's match at the fifth spot. At the conclusion of Nuhfer's match, Pultro led 6-3, 5-0. Ben Nance of Kutztown would hold a tough service game which brought the second set score to 5-1. Looking to seal the win, Pultro closed the door on a Kutztown comeback as he held serve to win 6-3, 6-1, clinching a 5-0 win for the Huskies.
“I'm really pleased for our four seniors who won their first PSAC Championship” raved head coach
Marty Coyne. “I've told them all along if you hang in there long enough something good will happen and now they get to see the fruits of their labors. Congrats on bringing the title back to Bloomsburg.”
Bloomsburg's PSAC title is their first since 2008, a year in which the Huskies finished 16-6 and won two NCAA Regional matches. The 2008 team eventually made their way to the NCAA Championships but fell to Valdosta State.
The 2012 Bloomsburg netters will have one final match to prepare for the NCAA Regionals as the Huskies host Bucknell University on Wednesday, April 25th. Match-time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Bloomsburg, PA.
