Jake Harner and Stu Marvin Win PSAC Swimming Awards

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University men's swim program picked up two big post-season honors with freshman Jake Harner (Philadelphia/Father Judge) being named the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Men's Freshman of the Year and head coach Stu Marvin being named the PSAC Men's Coach of the Year.

Harner had a tremendous rookie season for the Huskies qualifying for the PSAC in seven individual events, posting two NCAA 'B” cut times and setting three individual school records and four school relay records.

At the PSAC Championships he set individual school records in the 100-breast and 200-IM with marks of 56.88 and 1:52.40. In the 200-IM he also finished third to earn All-PSAC honors with his time being an NCAA “B” cut time. Back in November he also set the school record in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:05.76.

In relay action at PSAC's Harner was part of four relays that set two school records and earned two All-PSAC honors. In the 200- and 400-medley relays the Huskies set new school marks with times of 1:34.33 and 3:27.17.

Harner also helped the 200- and 400-free relay teams earn All-PSAC honors after finishing third in both events with the 400-free relay posting an NCAA “B” cut time. Earlier in the season he was part of those same relays that school records at the Zippy Invitational.

“Jake is a very versatile swimmer who can swim any stroke,” said Marvin. “He's also not afraid of any challenge that we put in front of him and is not afraid of pressure. He wants to swim last in the relays. We are very fortunate to have him swimming here at Bloomsburg. He could have gone anywhere.

Marvin, who finished his fifth season as the Huskies head coach, led the men's team to a second place finish at the PSAC championships this season. It was the Huskies best finish since 1968 when the Huskies also finished second.

Under Marvin's guidance the Huskies have steadily added depth to both its men's and women's rosters. His teams have established 24 team records, many of them set and re-set several times. A total of 264 additions to the school's All-Time Top Ten lists have been added during his tenure and his swimmers have recorded over 640 individual lifetime-best performances. Both teams have achieved CSCAA Scholar All-America recognition several times, including 21 swimmers named 2011-12 PSAC Scholar Athletes.

“This is an award I need to share with my assistant Erin (Cunnane),” Marvin continued. “She has been right there with me as we have built this program.”

“Receiving this honor is also a validation of five years of hard work,” said Marvin. “When we got here we had to change the philosophy of the team. Now all the swimmers are putting the effort in and achieving great things.”

“I remember having our team five years stay and watch the awards ceremony at PSAC's,” Marvin related. “I told them one day we would be up there celebrating and this year we were able to achieve that goal.”

Marvin arrived in Bloomsburg after spending 30 years in Fort Lauderdale, FL where he oversaw the operation of the aquatic complex at the International Swimming Hall of Fame and many other aquatic facilities around the city. He was involved in coaching with the former Fort Lauderdale Swim Team and Fort Lauderdale Aquatics. Marvin was also an administrator for the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) during their annual Swim Forum for 16 years. He was inducted into the Broward County (FL) Sports Hall of Fame in 2012 for contributions to aquatics.

A 1978 graduate of Bloomsburg, Marvin was an 11-time All-American performer for the Huskies in addition to winning five Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles. He was a two-time winner of the school's Underclassman Athlete of the Year award and received the Robert B. Redman Award as the school's top male senior athlete in 1978. He was the first swimmer inducted into the university's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990. The YMCA of the USA named him the recipient of the 2002 Joseph G. Rogers Award for outstanding service to their National Competitive Swimming & Diving Committee. Marvin is a certified member of the American Swimming Coaches Association, as well as member of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
