PUEBLO, CO—Bloomsburg University track and field standout
Vicki Davis (New Ringgold/Schuylkill Haven) can now add All-American to her resume of athletic accomplishments. Davis finished fifth in the 3000-meter Steeplechase at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships in 10:59.05 to earn the honor.
Running in the early evening on a hot day Davis, who qualified for the finals by running 11:07.61 in the prelims, ran with the lead pack for the first two laps before eventual champion Alicia Nelson of Adams State and Susan Tanui of Alaska-Anchorage pulled away from the group.
Davis and a group of four to five runners then battled in the second group contesting for third place. With two laps to go Jennifer Agnew of U-Mary broke from that group and ended up third. Davis then battled with Amy Schnittger of Chico State for fourth with Schnittger getting past Davis to take fourth.
"Vicki ran an outstanding race on her way to her first All-American honor," said head coach
Bernie Empie. "Tactically she made good decisions throughout the race, which enabled her to run slightly faster than yesterday and position herself in the top eight. I am thrilled for her and what she has accomplished this season. Although this was her first All-American honor, she has consistently been at top performer all year. It is clearly an honor that has alluded her until tonight!"
Davis, competing at an NCAA championship for the third time in 2012-13, becomes the Huskies first women's outdoor track and field All-American since 2003 when Danielle Kramer took sixth at 10,000 meters.
There will be little rest for Davis as she will race again on Saturday at 10:05 p.m. Eastern in the 5000-meter final. It will be her third race in as many days.
