Women's Heat Sheets
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg University will send 18 individual qualifiers and three relay teams to the 2013 PSAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Millersville on May 9-11.
The action kicks off with the women's heptathlon at 11:30 a.m. on May 9, with the 10,000-meter run also taking place on Thursday evening. Field events kick off Friday at noon, with track events following at 1:05 p.m. The meet wraps up on Saturday with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and track action at 12:35 p.m.
“Our women had a good year, with qualifiers in a number of different events,” Head Coach
Bernie Empie observed. “We'll be looking to score some points across a vast number of event groups, from the jumps and throws to distance and sprint events. We're very excited about our outlook. As we have since I got in here in 2008, we're looking to grow some depth and quality in every event, but the athletes who qualified will represent our team well.”
The Huskies will be led by senior distance runner
Vicki Davis (New Ringgold/Schuylkill Haven), who ranks in the top three in the PSAC in three different events. Davis, who competed in the 5,000-meter run at the 2013 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships this winter, has set school records in the 5,000 and 3,000-meter steeplechase this outdoor season. She recently had the opportunity to compete in the Olympic Development heat of the 5,000 at the Penn Relays and turned in a school record 16:50.44, the second best in the PSAC this year. She also turned in a BU record in the steeplechase with a 10:38.47 at the Bison Outdoor Classic. That mark also ranks second in the conference this year. Her times in both events have surpassed NCAA Provisional Qualifying standards.
Davis will be seeded third in the 1,500-meter run after a time of 4:39.68 on April 20 at the Team Challenge.
Katie Filemyr (Willow Grove/Bishop McDevitt) will join her in a talented steeplechase field. She will be seeded ninth at the PSAC Championships, but ran an NCAA Provisional time of 11:11.64 at the Bison Outdoor Classic. Filemyr also qualified for the PSACs in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs.
In the pole vault,
Kelsey Davis (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) cleared 11-11.75 (3.65m) at the Maroon & Gold Invitational on April 27 to rate third in the PSAC this year. It was an NCAA Provisional height for the junior. A year ago, Davis set a Bloomsburg record in the pole vault at the PSAC Championships by topping 11-8.5 (3.57m).
Tayler Harkins (Lansdale/North Penn) leads the BU throwers, qualifying in both the shot put and discus. Her shot put of 38-11.75 (11.87m) places her fourth in the conference entering the championships.
Alexis Rankin (Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham) will be seeded sixth in both the 400- and 800-meters. She turned in a season-best 57.89 at the LHU Qualifier last weekend in the 400 and ran a 2:16.32 in the 800 at the Maroon & Gold Invitational the week before. She is one of eight Huskies to qualify for the PSAC Championships in the 800. Rankin set the school record in the 400 with a 57.48 at last year's PSAC Championships.
Rankin was not the only Bloomsburg competitor with a strong showing at Lock Haven.
Nechole Hill-Perry (Harrisburg/SciTech) ranks seventh in the shot put in the PSAC after a heave of 122-11 (37.47m) at the same meet.
The quartet of
Ashley Bauer (Temple/Muhlenberg),
Lauren Bond (Hatfield/North Penn),
Lauren Lehman (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) and Rankin ran a 9:40.75 in the 4x800-meter relay, the fastest in the conference this season.
Bond, Lehman, and
Kelsey Harm (Boothwyn/Cardinal O'Hara) qualified for more than one event as individuals. Bond and Lehman each qualified in both the 800 and 1500, while Harm turned in qualifying times in the 5,000 and steeplechase.
