ERIE – A string of first half goals from the host Gannon Golden Knights proved too much for the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team as the Huskies fell in their season-opener, 4-1, at Gannon University Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Huskies (0-1, 0-1 PSAC) were able to muster a few early scoring chances, but saw the first goal of the season go the way of the Golden Knights when Michelle Genetin's shot from 10 yards out found the back of the net in the 18th minute.
Bloomsburg would answer, however, and knotted things up 10 minutes later when senior Tara Huber (Orefield/Parkland) rolled in a goal from the right side to tie the score at 1-1. The tally marked the 22nd goal of Huber's BU career, breaking a tie with Kelly Modes for 11th place on the Huskies' all-time goals list, just one score away from 10th in the Huskies record book.
Gannon (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) completely changed the complexion of the match in the span of less than 30 seconds during the 33rd minute. The Golden Knights broke the deadlock on a header from Amanda Gallant off a corner kick from Mani Brueckner. Just 22 seconds later, Gannon struck again on a shot by Ally Sharpe from the top of the 18-yard box. The Golden Knights completed their late-half barrage when Genetin again found the net off another corner from Brueckner for a 4-1 lead before halftime.
The Huskies' defense calmed the storm by holding Gannon off the board in the second period, but could not draw any closer.
Gannon held the advantage in shots, 15-9, though Bloomsburg put eight shots on goal as opposed to Gannon's seven.
Sarah Geffel earned the victory in net with seven saves. Danielle Fiorelli (Warrington/Villa Joseph Marie) made three stops for the Huskies.
Along with her goal, Huber also fired five shots on goal during the contest.
