Huskies Women’s Soccer Wins Home Opener

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team won its home opener 2-1 against Mercyhurst Saturday at Sports Stadium.
 
Mercyhurst, which falls to 0-1-1 on the season, were on the board first on a goal by Perrin Kern 20 minutes into the game off an assist from Janine Wong.
 
With five minutes left in the first half Tara Huber (Orefield/Parkland) passed the ball directly in front of the goal where Ashley Sanchez (Lyndhurst/DePaul Catholic) connected and blasted it into the back of the net to bring the score to tie at 1-1.
 
Bloomsburg, now 1-1 on the season, had many opportunities in the second half for scoring.  After a Huskies corner Jessy Shober (Marietta/Donegal) kicked the ball back into Lakers territory connecting with Huber who scored to bring the Huskies up 2-1 with nine minutes left in the game.
 
Danielle Fiorelli (Warrington/Villa Joseph Marie) recorded her first victory in goal this season by making five saves for Bloomsburg.  Ellie McDougall made six saves for Mercyhurst.
 
The Huskies got off 15 shots compared to seven for the Lakers.  Bloomsburg also held a 4-3 advantage for corner kicks.
 
Bloomsburg plays its next three games on the road starting Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Chestnut Hill University starting at 4 p.m.
