UPDATED BRACKETS / TEAM STANDINGS
SESSION ONE STORY
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team advanced five of its six wrestlers on day one of the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships being held in Oklahoma City. Moving on to day two were
Josh Veltre (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia),
Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley),
Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex),
Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) and
Justin Grant (Easton/Easton). Only
Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) did not advance for coach
Jason Mester.
Â
Veltre moves to the 165-pound quarterfinal round after posting a 5-2 win over Ryan LeBlanc of Indiana in the second round. Veltre, who upset the fifth seed earlier in the day, scored a takedown just 20 seconds into the match and rode out Leblanc the rest of the period. After the IU wrestler got an escape for the only scoring of the second period, Veltre got an escape of his own to start the third. He then closed out the match getting a point for three cautions on Leblanc and one point for riding time. He will face the fourth seed, Steven Monk of North Dakota State in the quarterfinals.
Â
Perry, wrestling at 197 pounds, had his 31-match winning streak snapped with a tough 4-3 loss to 11
th-seed Nathan Burak of Iowa. Perry led 2-1 after one period and was up 3-2 after getting an escape to begin the third period. It looked like Perry would be able to get the win as time was winding down. But Burak shot in and caught Perry on the edge of the mat for a takedown with just one second on the clock giving the Iowa wrestler the 4-3 win.
Â
Perry, who had not lost since early November, will now need to come back through the consolation round to earn All-American honors.
Â
At 174 pounds Dessino lost to the fourth seed Mike Evans of Iowa, 7-3. Dessino trailed 5-0 at one point in the second period, but got a reversal to make it 5-2. However, Evans got an escape and then a point for riding time to score the win.
Â
At 149 pounds
Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) beat Dyllan Cottrell of Appalachian State, the 12
th-seed, 6-1 to advance. Busler was in control of the match from the start and led 2-0 after one period. He then got a second period escape and a third period takedown and a point for riding time to win going away.
Â
Justin Grant (Easton/Easton) advanced in the 285-pound weight class beating David Devine of SIU-Edwardsville, 5-4. The match was tight throughout with Devine holding a 3-1 lead starting the third. Grant got an escape at the start of the third to make it 3-2. He then got a takedown with 50 seconds to go for a 4-3 lead. Devine escaped with seconds to go, but Grant had enough riding time to get the bonus point and win 5-4.
Â
The only member of the Huskies to not move on was
Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) at 133 pounds who lost 2-1 to Shelton Mack of Pitt. After no scoring in the first period, Mack had an escape in the second and Wilcox the third for the only scoring. In the sudden victory overtime neither wrestler could score. In the second overtime Mack rode out Wilcox in the first 30 seconds with Mack getting an escape during Wilcox's 30 seconds of control to win 2-1.
Â
Action resumes on Friday at 11 a.m. eastern (10 a.m. Central).
