ABOUT THE HUSKIESBloomsburg boasts an extremely young roster this fall, welcoming 12 freshmen into the program. The dozen newcomers will look to add to a Huskies team which won its final three matches of 2013 and missed out on the postseason by way of a conference tiebreaker after being in playoff contention until the final day of the regular season.
LAST SEASONBloomsburg finished the year with an 8-9-1 overall record and went 5-5-1 against PSAC competition. The Huskies had 13 of their 18 matches decided by one goal or less.
TOP RETURNERSSpencer Conrad (Enola/East Pennsboro) is the highest returning scorer, tallying two goals and an assist last year for a total of five points.
Chris Pawlowski (Philadelphia/LaSalle),
Mike Bamford (Doylestown/Central Bucks West),
Josh Smith (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg),
Matt Zima (Newtown/Council Rock North),
Nate Conrad (Enola/East Pennsboro),
Nick Izzo (Frankford, DE/Indian River) and
Stephen Pieri (Chalfont/Central Bucks South) all saw starting time during the 2013 season.
IN GOALThe Huskies will try to fill the shoes of the graduated
Bernie Roell (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) who played every second in net last year, recording six shutouts. Three goalies will battle for the job this year -
Jacob Pesarcik (Whitehall/Whitehall) served as Roell's backup last year and is joined by freshmen
Jared Ott (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) and
Taylor LeSage (Collegeville/Methacton) this season.
TRIBUTEThursday marks the fourth anniversary of the passing of former Bloomsburg men's soccer player Brian Savage. Brian passed away unexpectedly on September 4, 2010 and was a true friend and loyal teammate who is still missed today and will remain a part of the Huskies team forever.
ABOUT THE SPARTANSSt. Thomas Aquinas finished the 2013 season with a 7-8-1 overall record, going 4-6 in the East Coast Conference. The Spartans played just three matches away from home - going 2-1 in those contests.
St. Thomas Aquinas was picked eighth out of 11 teams in the ECC Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll. LIU Post took 10 of 11 first-place votes as the favorite ahead of NYIT, Bridgeport, Dowling and Mercy.
LAST YEAR'S MATCHThe Huskies came away with a 1-0 win at St. Thomas Aquinas in last year's season-opener.
Spencer Conrad (Enola/East Pennsboro) took a pass from
Anthony Manero (Richboro/Council Rock North) in the 51st minute and scored on a long shot at the top left of the box for the game's only tally. Bloomsburg's defense allowed only nine shots to get through, with four reaching the net. Bloomsburg held the 14-9 edge in shots.
UP NEXTBloomsburg makes its first road trip of the season, traveling to New York Institute of Technology on Saturday, Sept. 13.
