COMPLETE RESULTS
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Redshirt senior
Nikki Young (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) and sophomore
Becca Cubbler (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) had strong showings in the pool on Friday night as the Bloomsburg University women's swimming team posted a 133-70 victory over visiting Clarion University at the Nelson Field House Pool. The Huskies improved to 2-2 on the season while the Golden Eagles dropped to 2-2 on the year.
Young continued her torrid return to the pool, after missing all of last season with an injury, as she totaled three victories on the night - two of which were individual wins. Cubbler also posted a pair of individual victories to lift the Huskies to their second consecutive win. Redshirt junior
Marykate Boylan (Edgemont, Pa./Penncrest) finished with a relay win and an individual win to join Young and Cubbler as multiple-event winners on the night. Bloomsburg also posted 27 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) marks on the night.
The highlight of the night was Young's continued dominance in the 100-yard breaststroke as she won the event by nearly five seconds. Her time of 1:03.37 is her fastest time of the season, the second-fastest in school history - trailing only her own record of 1:02.32 she established during the 2015-16 season, and moved her up to second in the country in the event. Only Drury's Bailee Nunn has a faster time in the country this season - 1:01.67.
Bloomsburg started with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, posting a time of 1:47.93. It marks the fastest time in the conference this season. Sophomore
Kiera Wadsworth (Blakeslee, Pa./Ridley) gave the Huskies a strong first leg in the backstroke as she posted a time of 28.37 in her split - two-tenths of a second behind Clarion's "A" team. But, Young quickly erased the deficit, posting a ridiculous split of 28.82 - more than three seconds faster than the other five lanes - to give the team a lead they would not relinquish. Senior
Kate Cossitor (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) kept the lead intact in the butterfly and Boylan brought home the win with a great split of 24.22 in the freestyle.
The Huskies' "B" team finished second, thanks in large part to a 26.27 time by senior
Courtney Middleton (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) in the butterfly leg, erasing a deficit of more than a second. That team consisted of junior
Sydney Mercer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Millville), senior
Sarah Ritter (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll), Middleton, and freshman
Lindsay Mooney (Salisbury, Md./Parkside).
Cubbler won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:37.76 - five seconds faster than Clarion's Mary Clare Smith. Cubbler's time is the second-fastest mark in the PSAC this season. Freshman
Kelley McHugh (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) followed with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a mark of 1:58.61. Senior
Karly Hursey (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) was second while sophomore
Kaitlyn Floyd (Mertztown, Pa./Kutztown) finished fourth. All three, along with Mercer who swam provisionally, qualified for the conference meet.
Boylan won her second event of the night, touching the wall in 25.01 to claim a win in the 50-yard freestyle. Junior
Samantha Carpenter (Sunbury, Pa./Shamokin Area) and Mooney finished third and fourth respectively. Young then dominated the 200-yard individual medley, winning with a time of 2:11.10 - the fourth-best time in the conference to date. Middleton followed with a win in the 100-yard butterfly, posting the sixth-best time in the PSAC at 59.53. She was the only swimmer on Friday to finish the race in under a minute.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Cubbler won her second event with a time of 54.81 and then Hursey claimed a win in the 500-yard freestyle as she touched the wall in 5:13.73 - less than a second faster than McHugh.
The Huskies will return to action next Saturday, November 18, when they head to Dickinson College for a 1:00 p.m. start.
