LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior
Amanda Simone (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) won both the high jump and the triple jump and junior
Kirsten O'Malley (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) posted an NCAA provisional mark in the long jump as the Bloomsburg University women's indoor track and field team opened up the 2017-18 season at the Bison Opener, hosted by Bucknell University, on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies finished the day with nine Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifiers.
Simone, the reigning PSAC Outdoor Track and Field champion in the high jump, picked up where she left off last season as she captured the title in the high jump at Bucknell on Saturday. Her best mark of 1.65 meters also qualified her for the PSAC indoor championships at the end of the indoor season. Simone then went on to win the title in the triple jump with a PSAC-qualifying mark of 10.96 meters - edging Shippensburg's Olivia Lee's jump of 10.90 meters.
Meanwhile, O'Malley, an NCAA participant in the long jump at last year's outdoor championships, finished second in the long jump on Saturday but got an NCAA provisional mark under her belt with a mark of 5.65 meters.
Also, in the field events, freshman
Chelsea Vaughn () qualified for the conference meet in the high jump as she finished in a tie for fourth place with a best mark of 1.55 meters.
The Huskies had three other top ten finishers in the field events on Saturday - freshman
Alexis Burd (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) was seventh in the triple jump (9.81 meters), freshman
Kathleen Stevenson (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) was ninth in the long jump (5.04 meters), and freshman
Alaina Pearson (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin Area) was tenth in the pole vault (3.00 meters).
On the track, senior
Carli Dedics (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) highlighted the Huskies' results. She finished fifth overall in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.02 seconds and then placed fourth in the 200-meter dash by crossing the finish line in 26.55 seconds. Both marks qualified her for the PSAC championships. Dedics also teamed up with senior
Sarah Gottschalk (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), O'Malley, and freshman
Autumn Avery (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) for a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay as they posted a time of 4:02.23 - less than two seconds behind Bucknell's "A" team.
Gottschalk qualified for the conference meet in the 400-meter dash as she finished fifth with a time of 1:01.13. Freshman
Autumn Kaminski (Mountain Top, Pa./Holy Redeemer) finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a PSAC-qualifying time of 9.58 seconds.
Bloomsburg had several other top ten finishes on the track on Saturday. Avery placed third in the 800-meter run (2:26.30) while freshman
McKayla Lally (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) took second in the 800-meter run (2:26.10) and seventh in the 400-meter dash (1:02.35). Redshirt sophomore
Kendall Lookingbill (York, Pa./Red Lion) was eighth in the 300-meter dash (47.26) and Stevenson was tenth in the 200-meter dash (27.14). Freshman
Molly Hanna (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny Regional), like Lally, also had two top-ten results - she was tenth in the 300-meter dash (48.54) and tenth in the 60-meter hurdles (10.38).
The Huskies' "B" relay team of Pearson, freshman
Natalia Konitzer (Orangeville, Pa./Marian Catholic), Lookingbill, and Kaminski, also had a top ten result as they placed eighth with a time of 4:19.51.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday, December 8, when they head to Houghton, New York, to compete in the Houghton College December Classic. Action is scheduled to get underway at 4:00 p.m.
