COMPLETE RESULTS
EDINBORO—Senior
Nick McGuire (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) finished in third place to lead the Bloomsburg University men's cross country team at the 2018 PSAC Championships on Saturday at Edinboro University. As a team the Huskies finished ninth overall.
Â
With his finish McGuire earned first team All-PSAC honors, while teammate
Tom Moser (Natalie, Pa./Mt. Carmel) was 24
th overall to earn second team All-PSAC honors.
Â
Bloomsburg ran without two of its top five runners,
Hunter Jarratt (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) and
Kevin Konyar (Winchester, Va./James Wood) who were out with injuries.
Â
Running in a quagmire after several days of rain in the area, McGuire got off a fast start in the race quickly moving into the lead pack of runners on the long straightway to begin the 8k event. After moving out of view, McGuire grabbed the lead and led the field down the hill back into view of the spectators.
Â
On the second of three loops, McGuire slipped back to fifth place, but on the final stretch run he passed a runner from Gannon to get third with a time of 27:01. McGuire's third place finish was the best finish for a BU runner at the PSAC Championships since 2005 when Justin Shepherd was third. It's also just the sixth time in school history (since 1959) that a BU men's runner has been in the top three at a PSAC championship meet.
Â
Also having a solid day was senior
Tom Moser (Natalie, Pa./Mt. Carmel) who earned his first All-PSAC honor with a 24
th place finish in a time of 28:02. Moser ran a solid second half of the race moving past several runners to earn the All-PSAC designation. Another senior,
Eric Heatwole (State College, Pa./State College), was 59
th in 29:14, while
Chris McCormick (Ashland, Pa./North Schuylkill) was 77
th in 30:04 with
Anthony Moser (Natalie, Pa./Mt. Carmel) 111
th in 30:58.
Â
Head coach
Bernie Empie had nothing but praise for his runners.
Â
"I am extremely happy with how our men performed today," said Empie. Â "Running without two of our top five runners, the team really stepped up to finish 9th overall. It all started with a huge performance from
Nick McGuire (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood)! Nick put himself into the lead early in the race and battled with the top runners to finish third! Nick has been making steady progress all four years and has worked so hard to earn this honor. I can't be more happy for him! Our other guys filled in nicely in support and I really can't think of how we could have performed any better!
Â
Josh Coakley from West Chester was the individual winner of the race with a time of 26:47, while Mansfield's Ryan Clifford was second in 26:51. Edinboro took the team title finishing with 44 points.
Â
Bloomsburg will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 17, in Pittsburgh for the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships.
