KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Freshman
Alexis Burd (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) of the Bloomsburg University women's outdoor track and field team finished ninth overall in her section as she competed in her first collegiate heptathlon at the Mondschein Multi, hosted by Kutztown University. Burd finished the two-day event with a total of 2613 points.
Due to the largest field in the event's history - 24 teams and 73 competitors (combined men and women) - the event was broken into three sections - gold, maroon, and white. Burd, competing in the gold section, was ninth after the opening four events on day one.
Burd started out well on Friday as she finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 4.68 meters which added 484 points to her overall score. However, the freshman could not carry that momentum into the javelin as she fouled and did not add to her point total. She bounced back with an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:58.41, to conclude her first attempt at the heptathlon.
Shannon Gleason of Utica won the section with a total of 3584 points, just ahead of Wheeling Jesuit's Asya Carney who finished with 3480 points.
The Huskies will make the short trip to Bucknell University to compete in Bucknell's Outdoor Classic this weekend. Day one of competition is slated for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. while Sunday's final day of action is set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
