BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's tennis team opened the 2018-19 season by hosting Ithaca College and Wilkes University at the annual Bloomsburg University Invitational at the Burt Reese Tennis Center.

The Huskies began play with singles competition against Ithaca College and earned four victories in the nine matches during the morning. Sophomore Bernardo Abreu (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Rogedo) and sophomore Guille Carranza (Sevilla, Spain/Escolapios) both earned straight-set victories at numbers three and four while sophomore Robin Luetzig (Hadamar, Germany/Furst Johann Ludwig Schule) and sophomore Rafael Rufato (Sao Paulo, Brazil/OCEU Positivo) went three sets before earning wins.

Abreu took the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5), over Ithaca's Sam Fried and then completed the sweep with a 6-1 win in the second set. Carranza earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Jon Tuerk. Luetzig, playing at #6 on Saturday, won the first set, 6-1, against Garrett Boleslav, before falling in the second set via tiebreaker. Luetzig bounced back for a 10-7 victory in the third set to win his match. Rufato lost the first set to Ben Sharpe before winning the final two sets, 7-6 and 11-9, to come from behind for the win.

Sophomores Lucas Pedrotti (Caxias do Sul, Brazil/Sao Jose), Nagid Walle (Willemstad, Curacao/Saint Andrews (Fla.)), and Benjamin Tauber (Bethlehem, Pa./Nazareth Area), along with freshman Quin Bucheit (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg), took their opponents to three sets before falling in the third set tiebreakers.

Bloomsburg then played Wilkes in doubles early in the afternoon and swept the Colonels in four matches.

Luetzig and Tauber teamed up for an 8-1 victory over Larry Scartz and Andrew MacDonald while sophomore Vinny De Camargo (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Servico Social da Industria) and Bucheit earned an 8-3 win over Jack Maline and Alec Levin. Pedrotti and Abreu along with Carranza and Walle posted 8-6 victories in their doubles matches on Saturday.

Bloomsburg returns to action on Sunday morning, beginning at 9:00 a.m., for the final day of the Bloomsburg University Invitational. The Huskies will play Wilkes University in singles and Ithaca College in doubles.
