SINGLES BRACKET
DOUBLES BRACKET
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Juniors
Nagid Walle (Willemstad, Curacao/Saint Andrews (Fla.)) and
Robin Luetzig (Hadamar, Germany/Furst Johann Ludwig Schule) advaned to the finals of the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men's Tennis Doubles Championship on Saturday and finished as the runners-up in the bracket during competition of the league's individual championships at the Burt Reese Tennis Center.
The Huskies' duo opened the tournament with a 9-7 victory over the Kutztown team of Josh Karl and Renato Santos and then upset top-seeded Cormac McCooey and Unai Gonzalez from Mercyhurst, 8-4, in the semifinals to advance to the championship match. However, Walle and Luetzig fell to the second seed entering the tournament - Ting Hao-Hsu and Nils Plutat of Edinboro - by an 8-1 final in the championship to finish as the runners-up in the event.
In singles action, both Walle and sophomore
Oliver Wiesemann (Jena, Germany/Colegio Alemán de Málaga (Spain)) were eliminated from further competition after opening-round setbacks. Walle and top-seeded McCooey split the first two sets with McCooey taking the opener, 6-3, before Walle bounced back for a 6-1 win in the second. However, McCooey was able to avoid the upset with a 10-6 win over Walle in the third and deciding set.
Wiesemann, meanwhile, fell in straight sets to Millersville's Frank Yanni - 6-1, 6-4.
"Both Nagid and Oliver drew tough first rounds but Nagid showed he can definitely play with the top seeds," said Bloomsburg University first-year head coach
Rebecca Helt. "We just need to work on finishing those big points. I'm really proud of Nagid and Robin for getting to the finals as they beat two very good teams. In the finals, we faced a little more power than we were ready for, but overall, a very big accomplishment for those two."
The Huskies will host Mount St. Mary's in a scrimmage on Friday, October 11, before playing its final match of the fall season on Saturday, October 19, against Davis & Elkins at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. That match is slated to get underway at 10:00 a.m.
