Women's Tennis Wins Pair of Matches on Day 1 in Orlando; Men's Tennis Falls to St. Thomas Aquinas

Men's Tennis | 3/10/2019 10:37:00 PM

ORLANDO, FL - Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo) went 3-0 on the day with a pair of singles wins as the Bloomsburg University women's tennis team opened the 2019 spring season with a pair of wins over St. Thomas Aquinas (4-3) and Shippensburg (7-0) Sunday. The Bloomsburg University men's team also broke the seal on the spring season, but fell to St. Thomas Aquinas, 5-2.

The women's team jumped out to an early 1-0 team lead against St. Thomas Aquinas after the doubles matches thanks to a 6-3 win for the team of Giovanna Bonito (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) and Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) at #2, and a 6-4 win at #3 for Siena Cerra (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) and Sarquis. Cassandra Rohr would knot the match at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bonito at #4 singles, but wins from Capoferri (6-3, 7-5) at #1, Vitoria Nery (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Educandário Santa Maria Goretti) (6-1, 4-6, 10-6) at #3, and Sarquis (6-4, 6-1) at #6 locked up the 4-3 victory for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg's women kept it rolling in the nightcap with an impressive 7-0 win over Shippensburg. Bonito and Capoferri got the scoring started with a 6-3 win at #2 doubles, while wins from Cassidy Calimer (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami)/Nery and Devon DiCampli (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown)/Haille Hoeflein (Easton, Pa./Easton) would complete the doubles sweep. Bloomsburg was equally dominant in the singles matches, as all six Huskies in the lineup (Capoferri, Sarquis, Cassie Wentz (Windber, Pa./Winber Area), Cerra, DiCampli, and Hoeflein) notched straight-set victories.

Lucas Pedrotti (Caxias do Sul, Brazil/Sao Jose) and Bernardo Abreu (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Rogedo) got the men's team off to a hot start against St. Thomas Aquinas with a 6-4 win at #1 doubles, but a 6-0 win for Paul Voigt/Enej Hasicevic at #2 and a 6-4 win for Mitchell Harrison/Marcel Volz at #3 would give the Spartans the team doubles point.

Guille Carranza (Sevilla, Spain/Escolapios) was able to rally from a disappointing first set to defeat Voigt 1-6, 6-3, 10-5 at #3 singles, while Nagid Walle (Willemstad, Curacao/Saint Andrews (Fla.)) recorded the only other Bloomsburg singles win with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Harrison at #6.

The women's team will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against Immaculata University, while the men's team will return to the court on Tuesday, March 12, against Bentley. First serve with Immaculata is set for 3:00 p.m. Monday.
