BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Fresh off of its historic 2018 campaign, the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team – under the direction of head coach
Matt Haney – has announced the addition of nine student-athletes who will join the roster for the upcoming 2019 season.
Bringing more depth and skill to the program are Olivia Boucot, Maddy Brown, Abby Groff, Molly Groff, Amber Koshinski, Jess Lindeman, Campbell Power, Kylie Schwab, and Riley Spingler. This group will look to help build off the success of last year's team that finished fifth in the country, won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) regular-season and tournament titles, and won the Atlantic Regional championship.
"We are thrilled to have this fine group of young ladies joining the Bloomsburg University Women's Soccer Family," said Haney about his recruiting class. "Each brings her own unique attributes that made them attractive during the recruiting process, while all possess the characteristic that is most needed to join our program - the willingness to compete. Each is acutely aware - as are all our returners - that there are no givens in our program except that you will have the opportunity to compete."
Boucot, a native of Sicklerville, New Jersey, joins the Huskies after a successful career at Paul VI High School under head coach Keith Walters. She also played for head coach Scott Bissett and the Penn Fusion Pre-Academy 00 Club. She won the South Jersey Soccer Officials Sportsmanship Award and helped Paul VI High School to the semifinals of the non-public Group A while serving as a team captain. She also earned the Coach's Award at Paul VI. With Penn Fusion, Boucot helped the club win the EDP Division 1 Championship in 2017-18 and the Bethesda Flight titles in both 2017-18 and 2018-19. Off the pitch, Boucot was a member of the National Honors Society, the Italian National Honors Society, and earned second honors while serving as an ambassador and a peer leader. She plans to major in business with a minor in finance.
Brown comes to Bloomsburg after playing at Cedar Crest High School under head coach John Brubaker and with the Pennsylvania Classics Club under three different head coaches. A native of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Brown was a Lancaster Lebanon League Second Team All-Star as a sophomore and earned First Team All-League honors during her junior and senior seasons. She was also an All-County selection in both her junior and senior campaigns. A National Honors Society member, Brown also excelled in track and field where she was a district qualifier in the javelin as both a sophomore and as a junior. She finished fifth in the javelin in her sophomore year and eighth in her junior season. She was also a league qualifier in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. Brown plans to major in biology and pre-med with a focus in pre-physician assistant.
Natives of Sellersville, Pennsylvania, Abby and Molly Groff attended Pennridge High School and played for head coach Audrey Andreson. They both also played for FC Bucks in the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) under head coach Colin Koch.
Abby holds Pennridge's record for most goals scored in a season (19) and most career goals (36). She was a First Team All-League selection as both a junior and a senior, was a Second Team All-Intelligencer in 2017, a First Team All-Intelligencer in 2018, and won the team's Offensive MVP honors in both 2017 and 2018. Molly was a Third Team All-League honoree in her junior and senior seasons and was an Honorable Mention All-Intelligencer selection as a junior.
The Groff sisters helped Pennridge to the Suburban One League Continental Conference title three straight years. Pennridge also was a PIAA 4A quarterfinalist in 2016 and was the PIAA 4A state runner-up in 2018. While playing for FC Bucks, the team finished in the top four which enabled it to make the postseason. They were both Distinguished Honor Roll members and were in the National Honors Society. Abby plans on majoring in nursing while Molly intends to major in marketing with a potential minor in chemistry.
Koshinski, a native of Berwick, Pennsylvania, attended Berwick High School and played for head coach Paul DiPippa. She also played under head coach Dave Tumolo for the NSSC Strikers where she led the club to two indoor state championships. She was a four-time All-Conference defender at Berwick and was a four-year member of the Distinguished Honor Roll. Koshinski also excelled in track and field where she was named the Freshman of the Year and is the school's current record holder in both the 100-meter dash and in the pole vault. She intends to major in American Sign Language.
Lindeman joins Bloomsburg from East Northport, New York, where she attended Elwood John Glenn High School and played for head coach Shannon Colligan. Lindeman also competed for the New York Surf G01 Academy under head coach Brendan Faherty. Lindeman was an integral part in leading the team to the New York State Cup Championship which advanced it to nationals in Colorado. She was a Scholar-Athlete and was Cum Laude. Lindeman plans on majoring in biology and pre-med.
Power will join the Huskies after a successful career at Souderton High School in Souderton, Pennsylvania. She played for head coach Lindsy Jones at Souderton and also played for head coach Steve Mellor for PA Dominion FC 01. Power served as Souderton's team captain as a senior and earned the team's Leadership Award. She was named a Second Team All-League selection in 2018 after collecting Third Team All-League honors in 2017 and Honorable Mention All-League accolades in 2016. She also earned the team's Coach's Award. She guided Souderton to the PIAA 4A State Championship as a senior while leading the team to a pair of District 1 appearances. Power was also team captain for PA Dominion FC. Off the field, Power was a member of the National Honors Society and was an honor roll student. She intends to major in nursing.
Schwab comes to Bloomsburg after playing at Red Land High School, for head coach Jamie Miller, in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania. She also played for FC Eagle 01 and the Reading Rage. Schwab was a Second Team All-League selection as a senior after leading Red Land in goals. She was a four-year varsity player and was a member of the honor roll and the Friendship Club. Schwab has not declared a major as of yet.
The final recruit, Spingler joins the Huskies from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, and Neshaminy High School where she played for head coach Renny Papendick. She also competed for FC Bucks in the ECNL under head coach James Barry. The lone goalkeeper in the recruiting class, Spingler was an All-League Third Team selection and earned the Coach's Award as a senior while serving as team captain. She was also the team MVP as a junior and was named to the Bucks County Courier Times Golden Teams Honorable Mention Team. She helped Neshaminy to a state runner-up finish in 4A as a junior and collected 11 shutouts in 27 games. The team finished second in the conference and third in the district. As a sophomore, she posted 14 shutouts and guided the team to the District 1 4A championship. As a senior, she recorded eight more shutouts to give her 33 shutouts over three seasons. Spingler also helped FC Bucks to the ECNL national playoffs in 2016-17 and 2017-18. She plans on majoring in criminal justice.
"Not only is there success on the pitch with this group, but there is also great success in the classroom and community which are tenets of our program as well," added Haney. "We fully anticipate competition in the classroom as we are looking to build off our most successful academic semester during my tenure. It is implied that we are athletes, but more explicitly we want to be known as students first. The 2019 class will join a group of young ladies who have experienced success at Bloomsburg and who will remain dedicated and driven to be the best they can be."
Following its trip to the Elite Eight, the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team finished the 2018 season ranked fifth in the country according to the final United Soccer Coaches Division II poll. The Huskies finished the year with a 17-3-3 overall record. Picked to finish eighth in the PSAC according to the preseason coaches' poll, the Huskies won four of their first six matches before rattling off a 16-match unbeaten streak (13-0-3) before their NCAA quarterfinal loss to the University of Bridgeport to finish the season with a 17-3-3 overall record. Bloomsburg reached the national rankings for the first time in eight years when it was ranked 23rd in the country back on October 9. The Huskies continued to climb up the poll, moving from their initial ranking to 15th on October 16, to 10th on October 23, to seventh on October 30, and then finally to fifth in the final rankings of the year.
Bloomsburg won the PSAC Championship with a 2-1 overtime victory over East Stroudsburg on November 4 - the program's fourth overall conference title but first since 2002. The Huskies were then awarded the top seed in the Atlantic Region - the program's first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2010 and eighth overall - and went on to win the regional title with a 2-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on November 16 which sent them to the NCAA quarterfinal round for the third time in school history and first since 2000. Bloomsburg's 17 victories were one shy of the school record of 18 set during the 1996 season. Bloomsburg did set a school record with 15 shutouts during the campaign - sixth among all Division II teams in shutout percentage (.652).
