BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University football team concluded its spring season with the annual Maroon and Gold game on Saturday afternoon at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium. The gold team (defense) held on a for a 27-21 victory over the maroon squad (offense).
The game was played under modified scoring rules. The offense scored one point for each first down and two points for plays of 20 yards or more. The maroon team scored the traditional ways as well - six points for a touchdown, one point for a successful extra point try, and three points for a field goal. The defense was awarded points in the following ways: one point for a stop, one point for a tackle for loss, two points for a three-and-out, three points for a sack, four points for a turnover, and six points for a defensive touchdown (along with an extra point for the defense if the try was successful).
Offensively, redshirt sophomore quarterback
Erik Benjamin (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) had a solid day throwing the football as he finished 18-of-29 for 201 yards and one touchdown. Freshman
Carter Van Scyoc (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) also saw some action and was 4-of-7 for 13 yards. Redshirt junior
Michael Allen (Oley, Pa./Fleetwood) caught five passes for 98 yards and the lone score. Senior
TJ Tornetta (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) caught four passes for 33 yards while redshirt junior
Alex Gooden (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) hauled in four catches for 24 yards while also carrying the ball seven times for 21 yards. Also helping on the ground were redshirt junior
Qmac Quiteh (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) who toted the ball six times for 18 yards and freshman
Kevin Francis (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) who rushed seven times for 19 yards.
For the gold, redshirt freshman
Jeff Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) led the Huskies with eight total tackles while sophomore
Chris Monaco (Pocono Pines, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) chipped in four tackles and one quarterback sack. Redshirt freshman
Donovan Evans (Fayetteville, N.C./E.E. Smith) and freshman
William Martin III (Collingdale, Pa./Academy Park) added three tackles apiece. Martin III also posted one sack and one tackle for a loss.
The defense finished with four sacks on the day - one each from Monaco, Martin III, redshirt junior
Alex Annan (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), and freshman
Kenny Yurkonis (Pottsville, Pa./Minersville). Freshman
Gabriel Tilford (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) led the way with two tackles for a loss.
Bloomsburg is scheduled to open the 2019 regular season on Saturday, September 7 when it hosts Stonehill College at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
