BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Bloomsburg University is mourning the loss of
Tyler Horst (Schaefferstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County), a senior fullback on the Huskies' football team, who passed away on Saturday due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was 22.
Â
"We are devastated by the loss of Tyler," Director of Athletics,
Dr. Michael McFarland, said. "Tyler was a wonderful young man who embodied all the great elements of what it means to be part of the Husky family. He was a terrific leader for the program – both on- and off-the-field – and my heartfelt condolences go out to his family and his friends. Our thoughts are with the football team, its players and coaches, and all of our student-athletes and staff who had the privilege of knowing Tyler."
Â
Horst played in 19 games over the course of the past two seasons after redshirting as a freshman in 2017. He made his first career start at West Chester on Oct. 12, 2019. Primarily used as the lead blocker for the Huskies' running game, Horst had three carries for 11 yards – all of which came during the 2018 campaign.
Â
A criminal justice major from Schaefferstown, Pa., Horst was a three-time member of the Dean's List at Bloomsburg and carried an overall grade point average of 3.34.
Â
Prior to coming to Bloomsburg, Horst attended Eastern Lebanon County High School where he was a four-sport athlete. He was the Lancaster-Lebanon Section 3 Player of the Year as a junior after leading the league in rushing with 1,400 yards. He was a two-time Section 3 honoree at both running back and linebacker and also earned All-County honors at both positions twice.
Â
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Tyler's family," added Bloomsburg head football coach,
Frank Sheptock. "Our program will strive to embrace the qualities, characteristics, and values that Tyler embodied. We mourn the loss of a great young man, friend, and teammate – he is family."
