Welcome to Huskies On The Horizon where we will provide a brief recap of last week's events and preview the week ahead - including links on where you can follow along with your favorite Bloomsburg University athletic teams.

BASEBALL
Last Week
The baseball team posted a 2-2 record during a four-game stretch at the Wilson Tobs Tournament over the weekend. The Huskies beat Fairmont State twice and dropped a pair of games against Wilmington University (Del.) to split the four non-conference contests.

The series against Fairmont State saw the Huskies win the first game 6-5 as
Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) knocked in the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning. The run broke a 5-5 ballgame, which was tied after Fairmont State posted a total of four runs in the sixth and seventh innings to knot things up. Gibble finished the day 2-2 and he was joined by
Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty),
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) and
Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) with having two-hit games as the Huskies collected 11 total hits. The bats kept rolling in the team's second game against the Falcons as the Huskies posted 11 runs, 10 hits and three home runs in the squad's 11-3 victory on Sunday.
Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area),
Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and Newbert all homered in the contest and Gibble had another two-hit performance. Down 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, Bloomsburg posted seven runs and then added another two more in the eighth to come away with the eight-run win.Â

Against Wilmington, the club was in another tie ballgame entering the top of the ninth inning, but this time it was the Wildcats who scored a run to take the final lead of the contest and the win.
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) scored the team's lone run to tie things up in the sixth inning as he crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly that was hit by OFier. The Wildcats' go-ahead run came on a home run that was hit by Quintin Ivy. The second game saw more offense by both teams as each club collected at least 11 hits. Wilmington was able to come away with a 10-7 victory after they scored a total of seven runs across the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to top Bloomsburg.

On the Horizon
This week the baseball team will open up conference play when they play Shippensburg in a home-and-away series over the weekend. Bloomsburg travels take on the Red Raiders this Friday at 2:00 PM, then the club will host Shippensburg for a home doubleheader that will begin at 12:00 PM on Saturday.Â

LACROSSE
Last Week
The Huskies fell to Indiana (PA) on Saturday in a road contest by a final tally of 17-16.
Â
Trailing 14-6 at the half, the team was able to outscore the Crimson Hawks 10-5 in the second two frames to bring the game back within one, but the Huskies were not able to complete the comeback. Individual statistics are not available at this time.Â

The Huskies now have an even record of 1-1 as they head into a two-game week.

On the Horizon
The lacrosse team started its two-game week on Monday by beating Chestnut Hill at home, 23-3. The squad was led in scoring by
Kate Roberts (Lehman, Pa./Lake Lehman), who had four goals and one assist.
Kelsey Clauss (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) had three goals while
Abby Kalish (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley),
Kelsey Kilgallon (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts),
Annie Rollins (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) and
Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) each had two. Eight more players scored one goal for the Huskies as they jumped out to a 15-2 lead by the half and cruised to the victory.Â
The team will return to action on Friday with an away contest at Gannon University.Â

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TENNIS
On the Horizon
The men's and women's tennis teams will open up their spring seasons with an away contest at Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia on Saturday, March 12.Â
Â
Both teams will then compete at Fairmont State in Fairmont, West Virginia on Sunday, March 13.
Â
The competitions this weekend will be both team's first since they played at the University of District Columbia for their final contest of the fall season.Â

MEN'S SWIMMING
On the Horizon
Andy Thomas (Harleysville, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and the 200-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Thomas,
Pat Agnew (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove),
Jace Fry (Palmyra, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and
Collin Hummel (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) will be competing at the NCAA DII Men's Championships this week at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. The four-day event begins on Wednesday, March 9, and concludes on Saturday, March 12.Â

Thomas is eligible to compete in four individual events due to his invite to the championships for the 200 freestyle (1:36.43) and 50 freestyle (19.73), two out of the four individual events that he won at the conference championships. He will also be competing in the 100 free and 100 breaststroke after making 'B' Cuts with his two winning times at the PSAC Championships.

His invite allows the 200-yard freestyle relay team to compete at the championships as the quartet of swimmers secured their position to make the cut at their mid-season meet in Akron, Ohio during a time trial.Â

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP RELEASE

SOFTBALLÂ
Last Week
The softball team beat Bowie State (Maryland) both games of an away doubleheader this past weekend.Â
Â
The Huskies jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead after 2.5 innings of play and were able to hold on to their advantage to capture an 8-2 win. Nicollette Ray led the team's offense as she had three hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored.
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) had two hits and an RBI as five more Huskies collected hits.
Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) pitched all seven innings to record the win.

In the second game, the Huskies found themselves with a 10-8 lead through three innings as they posted a seven-run frame in the third to gain the advantage. The squad then added five insurance runs in the top of the sixth to come away with a 15-9 victory. Bloomsburg accumulated 17 hits in the contest as
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh), who had three RBI, and
Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) each had three hits apiece. Bella Cupp and
Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) both had four RBI and a pair of hits.

The wins give Bloomsburg an overall record of 6-2 as the team has now won four straight contests.

On the Horizon
The Huskies have one contest this coming week as they get ready for their busy spring break trip. Bloomsburg plays a doubleheader at Eckard in St. Petersburg, Florida on Sunday, March 13.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week
The women's basketball team closed out their 2021-22 season with an overall record of 18-11 as the team fell to Shepherd in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Quarterfinals last Wednesday, 76-53.

Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) led the Huskies with a career-best 16 points and seven rebounds while
Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) had 10 points and six rebounds.
Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) added nine points and five points. As a team, the Huskies were held to a 28.6% shooting day from the floor and were 2-of-19 from three-point range. Bloomsburg finished the day 5-for-19 from the free-throw line.

The Huskies won the rebounding battle 42-39 and outscored the Rams 16-10 on second-chance points, but Shepherd used 48 points in the paint to push past the Huskies.
Â
The Rams shot 45.9% from the floor (28-for-61) for the game and were 4-of-10 from beyond the arc. Shepherd was nearly perfect at the free-throw line as the Rams went 16-for-18, including Abby Beeman's 10-for-10 day at the charity stripe. Beeman had a team-high 32 points and Sydney Clayton added 25 and 12 rebounds.Â

Also last week, Saxton was named PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year as she and Corridoni were named to the All-PSAC East First Team.Â

The Huskies now hit the offseason in preparation of the 2022-23 season.Â

WRESTLING
Last WeekÂ
Three different wrestlers placed at the Mid-American Conference Championships over the weekend as the team finished 12
th overall with 42 points at the two-day event in Athens, Ohio.
Â
Josh Mason (New Ringgold, Pa./Blue Mountain) had the highest placement as he finished second overall in the 141-pound weight division.
Alex Carida (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) finished fifth overall in the 157-pound division and
Cole Rhone (Benton, Pa./Benton Area) placed fifth at 133 pounds.Â
Â
With Mason making it to the championship match, he earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Carida and Rhone have a chance to earn an at-large bid. Final brackets will be released by the NCAA on March 9. Â

On the Horizon
After the NCAA releases brackets for the championships on March 9, the association will hold the three-day event from March 17 to March 19 in Detroit, MI.
