Box Score BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg men's tennis team fought in a tightly contested match to defeat Chestnut Hill, 4-3, at the Burt Reese Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
"The men were down most of the match and found a way to fight for the win," said head coach
Rebecca Helt following Friday's action. The Huskies move to 1-0 following their first dual match of the fall. The Griffins drop to 2-1 following the action.
The team of
Denis Dementev (Saint-Petersburg, Russia/) and
Iu Casamitjana (Igualada, Spain/Escola Pia Igualada) got the Huskies off to a strong start in the doubles portion of the contest with a 6-1 decision over the duo of Bazzone and Vangenechten from the Griffins on Court No. 3. Chestnut Hill overcame Bloomsburg's early momentum, capturing a 1-0 lead in the match behind 6-4 victories on Courts No. 1 and No. 2.
Dementev's play from doubles carried over into his singles effort, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win in No. 1 singles against Relecom. The Huskies saw their first advantage of the afternoon following a victory on Court No. 3 from Dementev's partner, Casamitjana. The junior secured a straight-set win of his own, 6-2, 6-2, at Court No. 3 against Chestnut Hill's Raemaeker.
The Griffins knotted the match score at 2-2 following a win on Court No. 6 before
Vishesh Patel (Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India/Asia English School) responded for his team. Patel was locked into a three-set matchup with Brown, falling behind after the first set. The senior rallied to capture the final two sets for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory and give the Huskies a 3-2 advantage. That lead disappeared and became 3-3 with a three-set win on Court No. 4 for Chestnut Hill.
All eyes turned to the deciding contest on Court No. 5 featuring sophomore
Jaime Soria (Pamplona, Spain/Liceo Monjardin). Soria went up a set on the Griffin's LeFebvre before his opponent took the second set. In a back-and-forth third set, Soria prevailed to earn a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory and give Bloomsburg the win.
The Huskies compete at the Burt Reese Tennis Center on Friday, October 18, at 2:00 p.m. for a matchup with Daemen (N.Y.).
