SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Bloomsburg women's swimming team opened its dual-meet slate with a pair of victories Friday evening, using its depth and strength in the sprint events to defeat Shippensburg, 145-58, and East Stroudsburg, 126-77.
The Huskies wasted little time establishing control, claiming the top two positions in the opening 200-yard medley relay. Victoria Evans (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Sussex Academ), Avery Wenzel (Reading, Pa./Wilson), Jordyn Kinnee (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) and Sid Beers captured the event in 1:52.18, while Grace McBlain (Aldan, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), Vanesa Valli (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk), Ashley Martin (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) and Olivia Igou (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) followed just behind in 1:52.46.
Megan Luddecke (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro Horsham) led Bloomsburg in the 200 freestyle, finishing second overall in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying time of 1:58.06. Samantha Linsey (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) followed in third with another conference qualifying mark of 2:01.47, while Morgan Keefer (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern York) placed fifth overall at 2:02.56.
Bloomsburg then took complete control of the 50 freestyle, sweeping the top three positions. Igou led the way with a winning and PSAC qualifying time of 24.82, followed closely by Morgan Holmes (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) in 24.89 and Beers in 25.18. All three performances met the conference qualifying standard.
The Huskies added valuable points in the 200 individual medley behind Valli and McBlain, who finished second and third overall in PSAC qualifying times of 2:16.06 and 2:16.45, respectively. Maddie Fletcher (Wrightstown, N.J./Northern Burlington County) and Sadie Ludwick (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) followed in fourth and fifth.
Martin gave Bloomsburg another individual victory in the 100 butterfly, touching first in a PSAC qualifying time of 59.94. Kinnee made it a 1-2 finish for the Huskies with a conference qualifying mark of 1:01.25, while Ella Stillwagon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) placed fourth overall in 1:02.60.
Bloomsburg delivered one of its strongest performances of the evening in the 100 freestyle, sweeping the first three positions. Luddecke earned the victory in 53.66, Holmes finished second in 54.15 and Linsey took third in 54.20. All three swimmers posted PSAC qualifying times.
McBlain followed with a victory in the 100 backstroke, touching in 1:02.15 to meet the PSAC standard. Sarah Pickel (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) and Fletcher finished second and third in 1:03.59 and 1:03.69, respectively, giving Bloomsburg another sweep of the top three spots.
The Huskies also displayed their depth in the 100 breaststroke. Keefer led Bloomsburg with a fourth-place overall finish in a PSAC qualifying 1:09.95, followed by Valli in 1:10.35 and Wenzel in 1:11.10.
Bloomsburg closed the meet the same way it started it — with a relay victory. Linsey, Holmes, Beers and Luddecke combined to capture the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.85, more than three seconds ahead of Shippensburg's top relay and more than four seconds clear of East Stroudsburg. Igou, Stillwagon, Keefer and Evans added a fourth-place overall finish in 1:44.63.
The two victories completed a strong opening dual performance for the Huskies, who combined multiple event wins with a deep collection of PSAC qualifying marks across the lineup.
Bloomsburg returns to the pool Friday, Oct. 16, when the Huskies travel to West Chester for a 5 p.m. dual meet.
