Bloomsburg Downs Cheyney 28-6

Derrick Price scores three times in win as Huskies improve to 8-0 on the year

BLOOMSBURG-- Derrick Price (Burlington, NJ, Burlington City) rushed for three touchdowns to lead the fourth-ranked Bloomsburg University Huskies to a 28-6 win over Cheyney University (0-8, 0-5 PSAC East) in the Huskies annual homecoming game on Saturday.

Bloomsburg (8-0, 5-0 PSAC East) scored on its first possession of the game after forcing a fumble on the Wolves opening drive. Taking over on their own 43-yard line the Huskies moved 57 yards in nine plays with Price scoring from four yards out for a 7-0 Bloomsburg lead with 4:32 left in the first.

The Wolves answered on the ensuing drive moving to the Huskies 18 yard line before settling for a 35-yard field goal from Tyler Wilkinson cutting the lead to 7-3.

On the kickoff following the Cheyney field goal, the Huskies' Branden Wright (Danville, Danville) had a 45-yard return giving Bloomsburg the ball at the Cheyney 34-yard line. Five plays later Price scored from one yard out for a 14-3 lead.

Cheyney then put together a 17-play, 78 yard drive that ate up 9:44 on the clock, but stalled at the Bloomsburg four-yard line. Wilkinson connected on 22-yard field goal with 1:36 to go before half cutting the deficit to 14-6.

In the third period the Bloomsburg defense set up the Huskies third score when Alphonso Nathan (Philadelphia, Milton Hershey) recovered a fumble at the Wolves 40-yard line. A 38-yard pass from quarterback Dan Latorre (Elysburg, Southern Columbia) to tight end Ben Weaber (Lebanon, Cedar Crest) brought the ball to the Cheyney two-yard line before Price capped the short drive with a two-yard run.

Bloomsburg's final score came on an 11-yard pass from Latorre to Jordan Weisman (Mt. Laurel, NJ, Lenape) with 5:47 to go in the third period for a 28-6 advantage. Latorre finished 8-10 for 110 yards and one touchdown, while Thomas McFarland (Pottsville, Pottsville) made 10 tackles to lead the defense. Ron Hunter carried 22 times for 121 yards for the Wolves.

Bloomsburg hosts Shippensburg next Saturday in a key PSAC East showdown at 2:30 p.m. at Redman Stadium.
