Lacrosse Cruises Past Millersville

Samantha King and Tia Mazzie Score Five Goals Apiece in 17-5 Victory

BLOOMSBURG - Senior Tia Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) and sophomore Samantha King (Elkton, MD/Northeast) scored five goals apiece as Bloomsburg University defeated Millersville 17-5 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East lacrosse action on Monday night at Sports Stadium.

King led off the scoring 4:30 into the game on a pass from senior Kim Springman (Downingtown/Bishop Shanahan). King came right back a little over a minute later, finding the back of the net to put the Huskies up 2-0. Freshman Lyndsey Babilon (Boyertown/Boyertown) made it a three-goal game just 19 seconds later on another assist by Springman.

The Marauders came back to knot the game up, scoring three goals over nine minutes. The Huskies (4-1, 2-0) answered with three straight goals of their own, two coming from King and another from sophomore Allie Kakareka (Royersford/Spring-Ford), to give Bloomsburg a 6-3 advantage heading into halftime.

Bloomsburg came out strong in the second half, increasing its lead to five goals as Tia Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) found the net twice in the first 1:20 of action. Springman scored a goal of her own at the 26:51 mark, followed by two more goals from Mazzie to give the Huskies an 11-3 lead with 17:45 remaining in the game. After goals by junior Kelsey Schwan (Burnet Hills/Burnet Hill-Ballston Lake) and freshman Kelsey Metzler (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley), Millersville's Brittney Long stopped the streak with a goal at the 10:12 mark, bringing the Marauders deficit down to 13-4.

The Huskies responded with four straight goals, including two from freshman Gabrielle Lochetto (Phoenixville/Owen J. Roberts), giving them a 13-goal lead, before the Marauders closed out the game with a goal with 1:15 remaining.

Tia Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) added two assists to her five goals while Springman had one goal and four assists. Freshman Samantha Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) added three assists and freshman Shelby Iezzi (Pottstown/Owen J. Roberts) picked up five saves in the net for the Huskies.

The Huskies play again on Thursday as they host West Chester at 4:00 p.m.
