BLOOMSBURG-Allie Kakareka (Royersford, Spring-Ford) goal with six seconds left in overtime lifted the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team to a 14-13 win over Bentley University on Sunday.
With the team's tied at 11-all through the first 60 minutes of play, Bentley got on the board first in the first overtime session when Olvia Bouchard scored unassisted for the only scoring of the frame. In the second three-minute overtime, Kakareka tied the game at 12-12 just 19 seconds into period picking up a loose ball after a shot by Kim Springman (Downingtown, Bishop Shanahan). Bentley then regained the lead with a goal by Megan Wiggins off a Cori Geiger assist to put the Falcons back on top with 1:45 to play in the game.
The teams then traded turnovers before the Huskies Sarah Bennett (Gilbertsville, Boyertown) got a ground ball and gave it to Samantha King (Elkton, MD, North East) who took the ball and scored. On the ensuing draw control Tia Mazzie (Barto, Boyertown) got the ball for the Huskies, made a quick pass to Kakareka who went down the field and beat the Bentley goalie with just six seconds to go in the overtime period. Bloomsburg controlled the next draw control and ran out the clock for the win.
The game was evenly played throughout with the largest lead being a three-goal lead for the Falcons. Kakareka got the Huskies on the board first with a goal just 1:08 into the game. Bentley came back with seven of the next 10 goals to lead 7-4 with 13:44 to play in the half. Bloomsburg then closed out the period with goals from Mazzie, Lyndsey Babilon (Boyertown, Boyertown) and Samantha Mazzie (Barto, Boyertown) to knot the game at 7-7 at the break.
Kakareka scored the first two of the second half for the Huskies before Bentley scored three straight to lead 10-9. Bloomsburg tied the score on a free position shot by King, then, took a lead when Monica Novielli (West Chester/Rustin) scored at the 4:41 mark. The lead would last just over a minute as Bentley scored to tie the game at 11-all.
Kakareka finished with five goals and two assists, while King scored four goals for the Huskies, now 6-3. Bloomsburg plays at Shippensburg on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
