Huskies Lacrosse Falls at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG—Despite a four-goal lead at halftime, Bloomsburg University fell to Shippensburg 13-11 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Huskies (6-4, 2-2) got out of the gate quickly as sophomore Samantha King (Elkton, MD, North East) found the back of the net just 36 seconds into the contest. The Lady Raiders responded fast, getting a goal from Katie Brewer a little over a minute later. Bloomsburg would then get hot, getting two goals from freshman Sarah Bennett (Gilbertsville, Boyertown) and a goal each from senior Kim Springman (Downingtown, Bishop Shanahan) and freshman Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim, Springfield)  to take a 5-1 lead with 9:27 to go in the first half. The goal by Springman was the 100th in her career.

Shippensburg got back to within two goals with a little under six minutes to go before freshman Lyndsey Babilon (Boyertown, Boyertown) and junior Kelsey Schwan (Burnet Hills, Burnet Hills-Ballston Lake ) each scored goals to give the Huskies a 7-3 halftime lead.

The Lady Raiders hit two quick goals in the second half to get back to a two-goal deficit until freshman Monica Novielli (West Chester, Rustin) stopped the streak, giving the Huskies an 8-5 lead. After both teams traded goals, Shippensburg got hot, scoring six straight goals over 9:44, including give by Gayle Kuntzman, to take a 12-9 lead with under six minute remaining in the game.

Bloomsburg fought back, getting goals from King and sophomore Allie Kakareka (Royersford, Spring-Ford) to cut the Shippensburg lead to 12-11 with 3:01 remaining. However, the Lady Raiders controlled the faceoff and played keep away, getting an insurance goal with five seconds remaining to secure the two-goal victory.

King, Kakareka and Bennett each scored two goals apiece while five other players netted goals for the Huskies. Freshman Shelby Iezzi (Pottstown, Owen J. Roberts) played all 60 minutes in the net, posting six saves.

The Huskies travel to Kutztown on Saturday to play the Golden Bears in another PSAC East contest.
