WEST CHESTER – Despite four goals apiece from
Samantha King (Elkton, MD, North East) and
Allie Kakareka (Royersford, Spring-Ford), Bloomsburg University fell to sixth-ranked West Chester 13-10 in a battle between the top two lacrosse teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division.
The Huskies (10-5, 5-3) got out to a hot start, getting the game's first three goals as King scored twice in the first 6:23 and
Sarah Bennett (Gilbertsville, Boyertown) added a goal at the 22:26 mark. West Chester (13-0, 7-0) responded, getting goals from Alyssa Gallen and Shannon Hayes to cut its deficit to 3-2 with 10:11 left in the half.
After each team traded goals, Bloomsburg closed out the half strong as
Kelsey Metzler (Schwenksville, Perkiomen Valley) and Kakareka each found the back of the net in the last 3:33 to give the Huskies a 7-4 advantage at the half.
The Golden Rams didn't waste time, getting a goal from Erin Oczkowski just 34 seconds into the second half to cut Bloomsburg's lead to two. Kakareka put the Huskies back on top by three with a goal less than four minutes later before each team traded goals, making the Bloomsburg lead 9-6 with 23:19 remaining in the game.
West Chester then took over, scoring six unanswered goals over the next 14:44 to take a 12-9 lead with 8:35 left. The Huskies broke the scoreless streak just 23 seconds later as King scored on a free position shot to cut the lead to two with still more than eight minutes left. The Golden Rams then slowed their attack and played keep away until Lauren Glassey added an insurance goal with 2:25 remaining as West Chester went on to win by three.
Shelby Iezzi (Pottstown, Owen J. Roberts) started and went the entire distance in the net for the Huskies, picking up 15 saves.
The Huskies, still jockeying for position in the PSAC Tournament, close out their regular season with home games against Shippensburg on Wednesday and Kutztown on Saturday.
