BLOOMSBURG—
Samantha Mazzie (Barto, Boyertown) scored 10 points on six goals and four assists as Bloomsburg University defeated East Stroudsburg 19-15 in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Lacrosse Tournament on Tuesday at Sports Stadium. The 10 points tied Georgia Carinci for the single game school record, originally set in 2004 against West Chester.
The Huskies (13-5) scored quickly, going up 1-0 on a goal by
Tia Mazzie (Barto, Boyertown) just 26 seconds into the game. After a Michelle Mangiaruga goal tied the score a little over a minute later, Bloomsburg responded with goals from
Samantha King (Elkton, MD, North East) and
Allie Kakareka (Royersford, Spring-Ford) to take a 3-1 lead at the 23:57 mark. The Warriors (11-7) then scored three straight goals, including two from Ali Green, to go up 4-3 with 18:42 left in the half.
Samantha Mazzie knotted the score at four apiece less than a minute later before each team took their turn with scoring streaks. First ESU got three straight, with two coming from Molly O'Hara, to take a 7-4 lead. Then the Huskies came back, getting three-in-a-row to tie the score at seven with 8:34 left in the half. The Warriors responded with three more of their own before Bloomsburg closed out the half with back-to-back goals from Samantha Mazzie and
Sarah Bennett (Gilbertsville, Boyertown) just eight seconds apart to cut ESU's lead to 10-9 before halftime.
The Huskies picked up where they left off in the beginning of the second, getting a goals from King and Tia and Samantha Mazzie less than two minutes in to go on top 12-10. Each team then traded a pair of goals over the next eight minutes as BU still held a two-goal lead at 14-12 with 20:03 remaining in the game.
The Warriors fought back to take a one goal lead, getting scores from Laura Riegal, Mangiaruga and Jamie Wesztergom over a span of 3:29. Another goal by Samantha Mazzie at the 12:02 mark tied the game at 15-apiece before the Huskies closed out ESU, scoring four times over the final 9:39 to take the win.
Along with Samantha Mazzie's 10 points,
Tia Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) added four goals and an assist and King scored three goals of her own to help pace the BU offense. Mangiaruga scored four goals while Wesztergom and Green added three apiece for the Warriors.
The Huskies, the number two seed in the Eastern Division, will now face West leader Lock Haven in the semifinals on Friday at 4:00 p.m. The game will be played at West Chester, the East leader and host of the tournament. WCU will play West number three Gannon, who upset second seeded Mercyhurst 15-9 today.
