BLOOMSBURG— Allie Kakareka (Royersford, Spring-Ford) scored four goals to go along with three assists as Bloomsburg University defeated East Stroudsburg 13-5 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East lacrosse action on Tuesday night at Sports Stadium.
East Stroudsburg struck first, getting a goal off a free position from Maura Perrymond just 1:33 into the game. The Huskies (8-4, 4-2) responded, as Kakareka found an open Samantha Mazzie (Barto, Boyertown) to even the game less than five minutes later. Both teams played tough defense as neither was able to find the back of the net until Lindsay Kupferschmidt (Royersford/Spring-Ford) (Royersford, Spring-Ford) scored on a free position with a little less than 14 minutes to go in the first half.
After East Stroudsburg's Molly O'Hara scored less than two minutes later to tie the score at two, the Huskies struck quick with goals from Kakareka and Natalie Draham (Blue Bell, Wissahickon) 1:28 apart to take a 4-2 advantage. The Warriors again responded with a goal, but the Bloomsburg offense came right back with another goal from Kakareka on a free position and one from Samantha King (Elkton, MD, North East) on a pass from Samantha Mazzie as the Huskies took a 6-3 lead into halftime.
Bloomsburg came out firing in the second half, getting five unanswered goals in the first 8:35 of action to take a commanding 11-3 lead. Both Kakareka and Samantha Mazzie beat the goalie twice while King added the fifth goal. The Warriors tried to rally, getting a goal from Jamie Wesztergom at the 21:07 mark before Tia Mazzie (Barto, Boyertown) and King got two more for the Huskies, increasing their lead to 13-4 with 18:24 remaining. East Stroudsburg got another goal just 1:25 later from O'Hara, but both defenses turned on the heat, not allowing a good shot for the last 16 minutes-plus, as Bloomsburg scored the eight-goal win.
In addition to Kakareka's four goals, King and Samantha Mazzie added three apiece. Shelby Iezzi (Pottstown, Owen J. Roberts) went all 60 minutes in goal for the Huskies, stopping 13 shots. With the win, the Huskies move into a tie with Shippensburg for second place in the PSAC East, two games back of undefeated West Chester.
The Huskies will go on the road next as they travel to Slippery Rock on Saturday. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
