SHIPPENSBURG—The Bloomsburg University field hockey team (18-0, 10-0 PSAC East) advanced to the championship game of the PSAC Tournament after shutting out the Crimson Hawks of IUP (12-7, 7-3 PSAC West), 6-0.
Brooke Simonovich (East Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) led the way for the Huskies with four points on one goal and two assists.
"All across the boards it was a team effort. Everyone had the chance to play, which is a great opportunity” said head coach
Nikki Rhoads.
Bloomsburg wasted little time today as
Brooke Simonovich (East Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) scored the game's opening goal just 2:12 into the contest. After a corner for the Huskies, Simonovich found a loose ball and buried the shot for a 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes later Simonovich fired a shot that was blocked by a Crimson Hawk defender. From there,
Amanda Riley (Tannersville/Pocono Mountain East) followed the rebound and finished the play by scoring her 12th goal of the season to make it 2-0.
After another quick goal by the Huskies,
Jenna DiSabatino (Mountain Top/Crestwood) made it 4-0 with her 12th goal of the season. DiSabatino weaved her way through several defenders before connecting on Bloomsburg's fourth goal of the game at the 18:54 mark. BU came up with one more goal before the half came to a close, owning a dominant 5-0 lead.
The second half was uneventful compared to the first, however the Huskies did outshoot IUP 8-5 in the half. Bloomsburg did breakthrough for another score late in the second as
Felicia Domenici (Kunkletown/Pleasant Valley) scored her first collegiate goal at the 67:33 mark.
Meghan Hollenbach (Blandon/Fleetwood) got the start in goal today for the Huskies. The junior goalie made two saves in 60:57 of action. Back-up
Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) played the remaining 9:03 of the contest and also came up with two saves.
With the win the Huskies await the winner of Shippensburg and C.W. Post, today's second semifinal game. Bloomsburg will look for their fourth straight PSAC Championship tomorrow, October 29. Game-time has been moved to 10:00 a.m. due to the possibility of poor weather conditions. There will be a tape delayed broadcast at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow through PCN Cable and can also be seen online at pcntv.com.
