Huskies Suffer First Loss of 2011 Season

Box Score

BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University running back Franklyn Quiteh (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns in heavy snowfall but it was not enough as C.W. Post (5-4, 5-1 PSAC East) shocked the no. 2 Huskies (8-1, 5-1 PSAC East), 24-21.  It was the second time in the Danny Hale era that the Huskies dropped a game while holding a lead entering the fourth quarter.

Eddie Mateo (Bethlehem/Freedom) was limited to 63 rushing yards but it was enough to give him 1,000 yards on the season.  He becomes the ninth different running back to reach the 1,000 yard plateau in Bloomsburg University football history.

Bloomsburg started with the game with the ball at their own 35 yard line.  On 2-15, Quiteh snapped a 70 yarder for a touchdown just 1:10 into the game.  Dan Fisher connected on the point after to give BU a 7-0 in the first quarter.  Quiteh's 70-yarder was the longest this season for all Husky tailbacks.

C.W. Post put together a scoring drive on their next possession, going 65 yards on 14 plays, using up 4:37 of the clock.  The Pioneers drove all the way to the BU five yard line before their next two plays resulted in losses, leading to a 27 yard field goal from Marc Montana.  The score now stood at 7-3 with 9:12 to play in the first.

On Bloomsburg's next possession, Pat Carey (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.) found a streaking Kyle Fisher (Denver/Cocalico) for a huge 46-yard gain on third and four, bringing the ball to the C.W. Post 10 yard line.  Eddie Mateo (Bethlehem/Freedom) got the carry on the next play but was stripped of the ball in the backfield with a C.W. Post defender recovering the fumble. The Huskies forced a three and out on the ensuing possession, starting their next drive at their own 45 yard line.

On the drive BU marched to the Pioneer 15 yard line before lining up for a 32 yard field goal.  Dan Fisher attempted the kick but missed left giving the Pioneers the ball back with 1:29 left in the first quarter.

At the 13:20 mark in the second quarter, C.W. Post took their first lead of the game.  Quarterback Steven Laurino completed a 31 yard pass to Ryan Derham for a Pioneer touchdown.  The Huskies now trailed 10-7.

The Huskies answered back with a touchdown at the 8:29 mark in the second quarter as Quiteh scored his second of the day from five yards out.  Prior to the touchdown run, Quiteh broke off a 41 yard run that set up the eventual touchdown that put BU ahead 14-10.

C.W. Post was forced to punt on their next possession after driving 37 yards out to the Bloomsburg 45 yard line.  DJ Robinson (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) gave the Huskies great field position as the freshman specialist returned the punt 78 yards to the Post nine yard line.  Unfortunately quarterback Pat Carey (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.) was picked off in the end zone three plays later, ending scoring hopes for Bloomsburg.

Neither team was able to score as the half came to a close, 14-10 in favor of the Huskies.

Bloomsburg's defense forced a punt after a three and out by the Pioneer offense, giving the Huskies the ball at their own 30.  BU drove 48 yards on 14 plays, using up just over six minutes of game-time to set up a 40 yard field goal.  Dan Fisher's attempt banged off the upright, keeping the game at 14-10.

Starting from their own 22 yard line, C.W. Post looked to put some points on the board but was denied as Dan Haverstock (York/West York) intercepted a pass on the Pioneer's third play.  Haverstock returned the pick 32 yards to the Post seven yard line.  BU's Mateo pounded it in on the next play, giving the Huskies a 21-10 advantage with 6:26 left in the third.

Jeff Mack rushed for 35 yards on Post's next offensive series to lead the Pioneers to a touchdown.  On a fourth and six situation on the Bloomsburg 26, the Huskies were called for pass interference which kept the Pioneer drive alive.  Mack would eventually sneak in from six yards out to cut the Husky lead to 21-17 with 3:10 left in the quarter.

The Huskies started with the ball in fourth quarter and drove 22 yards to the Post 34.  On fourth and six Bloomsburg elected to punt but snowy/windy conditions produced a 14 yard punt, giving the Pioneers the ball at their own 20.

C.W. Post used 5:11 of clock to cover 80 yards on 13 plays to gain their first lead since the second quarter.  The Pioneers converted on three third downs, two of which were more than eight yard conversions.  Jeff Mack ended the drive with a three-yard keeper that put the Pioneers ahead, 24-21.

After a short offensive series, the Huskies punted the ball back to Post with 5:10 remaining in the game.  On third and eight, senior Ryan Olaf (Danville/Danville) forced a fumble with fellow senior Justin Rivera (Bethlehem/Liberty) recovering at the Bloomsburg 45 yard line with just over four minutes to play.

A pass interference call on Post brought the ball to their own 40 yard line but the BU offense stalled again as they turned the ball over on downs with 2:27 left.

Bloomsburg's defense came up strong again, stopping the Pioneers on third and three, forcing a Post punt.  The Huskies took over at their own 29 with 1:27 to play.  Pat Carey (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.) was picked off on 3-15 as the game came to a close in favor of C.W. Post.

Jarrett Pidgeon (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) recorded 12 tackles, his third game in a row with double digit tackles.  Sean Clift (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic) added another 10.  For C.W. Post, Jeff Mack had a phenomenal game, rushing for 183 yards on 35 carries and scoring twice.  Steven Laurino threw for 194 yards on 12 completions for a touchdown.

Bloomsburg will look to bounce back as they travel to take on no. 16 nationally ranked Kutztown University in a 1:00 p.m. game.
