Wrestling Team Opens 2011-12 Season With Two Wins

COLLEGE PARK, MD—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team won two of three matches at the Terrapin Duals at the University of Maryland in the season opener for the Huskies.

In the first match of the day the Huskies beat Franklin and Marshall, 27-10.  Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks) started the day off with a win by technical fall before the Diplomats came back and won the next two bouts to go on top 6-4.

Bloomsburg rallied winning the five matches to the things out of reach. Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) won by major decision at 149 followed by a win from Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) at 157 who rolled to an easy 19-2 victory. At 165 Kevin Hartnett (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) won 8-2, before Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) scored a 2-0 decision at 174 over Matt Fullowan, a 2011 NCAA qualifier and ranked 22nd in the country by the Wrestling Report. True freshman Mike Mirra then won by major decision, 12-2, putting the Huskies up 24-6 at that point. F & M won at 197 pounds before senior heavyweight Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) won 3-0.

In match two of the day the Huskies lost to 11th-ranked Maryland 26-6. The Huskies picked up wins from Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) at 149 pounds who beat Ben Dorsay, ranked 31st by the Wrestling Report, and Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) at 157 who beat Kyle John, ranked seventh by WIN magazine. The Huskies battled hard in the other matches losing three by three points or less, including Mike Mirra at 184 pounds who lost 17-16 in his match.

The Huskies ended the day with a 53-0 rout of Johns Hopkins University. Bloomsburg earned bonus points in each of the 10 matches on the day winning five matches by fall, two by major decision, one by technical fall and one by forfeit.
