Wrestling Team Falls to Penn

Frank Hickman Goes for the Pin at 157 Pounds
BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team lost to 19th-ranked University of Pennsylvania on Friday night in the home opener for the Huskies.

The Quakers jumped out to an 11-0 lead after the first three matches, but the Huskies rallied with wins from Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) and Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) to make it 11-9. After a win by Penn, Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) got a takedown with seconds to go to close the gap to 17-12. Penn, though, closed out the match with three wins.

Bloomsburg, 3-2, will be back in action on Saturday hosting the BU Duals at 9 a.m.  Penn goes to 3-1 on the season.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
125— The Quakers Geoffrey Bostany struck first with an early takedown, but the Huskies Dereck Enders (Newville/Big Spring) responded with an escape and a takedown. Late in the first, Bostany went ahead 4-3 with a reversal. The second period was scoreless. Halfway through the third period, Bostany would get an escape and win 6-3 with riding time.
 
133— Pennsylvania's Bryan Ortenzio, ranked 15th, jumped out of the gates with two takedowns, but Bloomsburg's Craig Barker (Lecanto, FL/Citrus) answered back with an escape putting the match at 4-1. Ortenzio extended his lead in the second to 5-1 after an early escape. Ortenzio took control in the third period with two takedowns to end the match with a 10-2 major decision with riding time over Bloomsburg.
 
141- The first period consisted of the Quakers 4th-ranked Zack Kemmerer posting two takedowns on Bloomsburg's Matt Rappo (Holland/Council Rock South) to take a 4-1 lead. Kemmerer scored a reversal seconds into the second to extend the lead to 7-1. Pennsylvania's Kemmerer wasted no time in the third with an early escape, a takedown, and two back points. Late in the third, Kemmerer kept the pressure up with another takedown to secure the 14-2 major decision with riding time.
 
149—Bloomsburg's 24th-ranked Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) got on the board first with a takedown, but Pennsylvania's Steve Robertson escaped to end the period down 2-1. In the second, Busler scored a takedown and Roberston had an escape. Busler secured his lead in the third with two back points and a takedown. Roberston quickly answered back with an escape but Busler would go on with riding time to win by a 9-3 decision.
 
157—The Huskies Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney), ranked 12th, had a takedown in the first to lead 2-0 after one. Bloomsburg extended the lead in the second with a reversal, but Troy Hernandez of Pennsylvania got on the board shortly after with an escape ending the period 4-1. Hickman got a takedown and eventually went on in the third to win by fall in 6:11.
 
165—The Quakers Lorenzo Thomas posted a late takedown in the first to lead 2-0 after one. Thomas quickly had a reversal in the second to extend the lead to 4-0. After two takedowns early on in the third by Thomas he went on to pin Hartnett in 6:17.
 
174—Pennsylvania's Ian Korb struck first with an early takedown over Bloomsburg, but Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex), ranked 26th, answered back with an escape. Under a minute left in the second period, Dessino earned a takedown to head into the third on top 3-2. Dessino jumped out early in the third with an escape, but Korb countered with a takedown and a near fall. Late in the third, Dessino had a reversal and a takedown with just seconds to go to win by decision, 8-7.
 
184— The Quakers Erich Smith took control in the first with two takedowns, while Bloomsburg's Mike Mirra got on the board with an escape. Smith earned an escape and a takedown to go up 7-2 at the end of the second period. The Huskies Mirra would escape early on in the third, but Smith's takedown shortly after would secure his 10-4 decision with riding time.
 
197—There was no scoring in the first period between Bloom's Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) and Pennsylvania's 7th-ranked Micah Burak. Burak would get an early escape in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Perry's escape late in the third would tie up the match 1-1 and force overtime. The first overtime was scoreless between Perry and Micah. In the second overtime, Micah picked up a takedown and an escape, but Perry quickly escaped to close up the gap. Micah jumped out in the third overtime with a takedown to earn a 6-3 decision over Perry.
 
285—After a scoreless first period, the Quakers Anthony DiLondardo scored an early escape to go ahead 1-0. Bloomsburg's Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) had two escapes in the third, but it was not enough after DiLondardo scored a takedown to secure the 3-2 decision.
