Bloomsburg Falls to Binghamton in Wrestling

Huskies Drop 19-16 Decision

Frank Hickman wins by major decision for the Huskies at 157 pounds against Binghamton
BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team lost a tough 19-16 non-conference match to Binghamton University on Thursday night at the Nelson Field House. Five of the bouts during the match were decided by three points or less.

The Huskies had taken an early 6-0 lead winning when Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks) (125) and Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) (133) both scored wins by decision. Binghamton rallied and scored a win by major decision at 141 and a win by fall at 149 to go on top 10-6.

Bloomsburg's Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney), ranked 25th at 157 pound, knotted the match at 10-all when he scored an 11-3 win over the Bearcats 32nd ranked Matt Kaylor. Binghamton answered with wins by decision at the next two weights before Nate Graham (Selkirk, NY/Ravena) at 184 pounds earned a 2-1 victory to make it 16-13 in favor of Binghamton.

At 197 pounds Binghamton pulled out a 5-4 win putting the visitors up by six. At heavyweight, needing a pin to tie the score, Bloomsburg's Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) could only post a 4-2 win for the final team score of 19-16.

Both teams go to 13-6 on the season. Bloomsburg will be back at home for their final home match of the year on Friday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. against Lock Haven.

125— The Bearcats Derek Steeley scored a takedown just seconds into the match, but Bloomsburg's Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks) was able to escape and counter with a takedown of his own midway through the first period. Steeley would escape late in the first to knot the match at 3-3 after one. Steeley started the second period on the bottom and was able to escape, but Boylan scored another takedown to lead 5-4 after two. There was no scoring in the third period, with Boylan earning the 5-4 decision.

133— The Huskies Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) had a takedown midway through the first period and a reversal in the second to put the score at 4-0 after two periods. Binghamton's Dan Riggi scored an escape in the third, but Wilcox would hold on for the 5-1 decision with riding time.

141— There was no scoring in the first period between Bloom's Derek Shingara (Shamokin/Shamokin) and the Bearcats Anwar Goeres. Shingara would strike first with an escape early in the second, but Goeres had a takedown and a 2-point near fall to lead 4-1 after two. After an early escape, Goeres added another takedown and a 3-point near fall to earn the major decision victory by a score of 11-1.

149— Binghamton's Donnie Vinson jumped out of the gates quickly with two takedowns and a 3-point near fall early in the first period. Vinson would go on to win the match by fall at the 2:13 mark.

157— The Bearcats Matt Kaylor struck first with an early takedown, but Bloomsburg's Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) would escape to put the match at 2-1 after one. Hickman had an escape in the second to knot at 2-2 heading into the third period. Hickman started the third on top and would score two consecutive 3-point near falls before Kaylor could escape. Hickman added a takedown just before the final horn to secure the 11-3 major decision with riding time.

165—Bloomsburg's Josh Veltre (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) got on the board first with a takedown, but Binghamton's Justin Lister escaped and scored a takedown of his own to lead 3-2 after the first period. Lister extended his lead to four after an escape and a takedown in the second. After beginning the third on the bottom, Veltre scored a reversal to cut the lead in half, but Lister was able to escape on hold on for the 7-4 decision with riding time.

174— Binghamton's Ryan McGarity had a takedown in the first to lead 2-0 after one. Bloomsburg's Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) would counter with an escape to being the second period, putting the match at 2-1 heading into the third. McGarity added an escape in the third to secure the 4-1 decision with riding time.

184— There was no scoring in the first period between the Huskies Nate Graham (Selkirk, NY/Ravena) and the Bearcats John Paris. Graham got on the board first in the second period with a takedown, and would take the 1-0 into the final period. Paris would knot the match at 1-1 late in the third, but Graham put together over two minutes of riding time to secure the 2-1 decision.

197— After a scoreless first, Bloomsburg's Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) scored a late second period takedown but was reversed by Binghamton's Nate Schiedel just before the end of the period. After an early escape by Schiedel to begin the third, Perry scored a takedown to lead 4-3 late in the third, but Schiedel answered with a reversal to secure the 5-4 decision.

285— There was no scoring in the first period between Bloom's Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) and Binghamton's Cody Reed. Walsh would take a 1-0 lead into the third period after an escape midway through the second. Reed would take a one point lead after an early third period takedown, but Walsh countered with an escape and a takedown to secure the 4-2 decision victory.
