Wrestling Team Rallies for Win over Clarion

Bloomsburg Wins 19-15 on Friday

Derek Shingara Posted a First Period Pin Against Clarion
CLARION—Bloomsburg University won the final two matches of the night to rally for a 19-15 win over Clarion University in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) matchup on Friday night. The win gave the Huskies a measure of revenge as it had finished as a runner-up to Clarion at the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) championships in early December.

The Huskies started the evening, which began with the 141 pound match, with Derek Shingara (Shamokin/Shamokin) getting a first period pin. Shingara trailed 2-1 in the first when he took down Hunter McGraw and posted the fall in just 2:11.

Clarion came back with wins in the next four weights to go on top 12-6 with those of those losses by two points or less. Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) lost 4-2 at 157 pounds, while Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) suffered a 5-4 loss at 174 pounds.

The Huskies regained the lead after picking up wins at 184 and 197. At 184 Nate Graham (Selkirk, NY/Ravena) won his 20th match of the season, 8-0. Graham scored a first period takedown and a two-point near fall in his win over Steven Cressley. At 197 pounds Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) used a second period takedown to score a 2-1 win over Alex Thomas to put Bloomsburg on top 13-12.

At 285 pounds Clarion's Quintas McCorkle won 3-2, tie-breaker 2, over Bloomsburg's Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls). McCorkle scored an escape in tie breaker two to get the win and put the Golden Eagles up 15-13.

The Huskies Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks) put the Huskies back on top with a 6-0 win over Tom Gowing. Boylan scored a first period takedown, then had an escape and a takedown in the second period and earned the extra point for riding time as Bloomsburg regained the lead 16-15.

With the match on the line Bloomsburg's Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) posted a 4-0 win over Trey Hicks. Wilcox scored a first period takedown, then got an escape in the second period to go on top 3-0, then added a point for riding time for the final margin of 4-0.

Bloomsburg goes to 12-5, 1-3 in the EWL, while Clarion falls to 3-6, 1-2 in the EWL. The Huskies return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Cleveland State.
