PHILADELPHIA—Bloomsburg University wrestlers
Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) and
Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) saw their seasons come to an end with losses on Friday in the consolation bracket at the NCAA Division I National Championships in Philadelphia.
Hickman opened the day with a second round consolation win, 6-4, against Colton Salazar of Purdue. Salazar got the first points of the match with a takedown with Hickman later working an escape to trail 2-1 after one period.
To start the second period Hickman chose bottom and tied the match at 2-2 with an escape. He then went ahead 4-2 with a takedown. After Salazar escaped to make it 4-3, Hickman got his second takedown of the period and led 6-3 after two period.
In the third period Salazar chose bottom to start, and after escaping, narrowed the lead to 6-4. However, Hickman did not give up the takedown and posted the 6-4 win.
In round three of consolations Hickman lost to Robert Erisman of Oklahoma State, 4-1. Erisman opened the match with a takedown to lead 2-0 after one period. In the second period Erisman chose bottom and escaped to go on top 3-0. In the third, Hickman escaped after starting on bottom, but could not get the takedown, and with riding time, lost 4-1.
Dessino lost his only match of the day to Nick Heflin of Ohio State, 8-2, in round two of the consolation bracket. Heflin led 2-0 after one period and opened a 5-0 lead after two periods. In the third Helfin got a two-point near fall before Dessino escaped. Dessino later got a point after Heflin was called twice for stalling. With riding time Heflin posted the win 8-2.
