Lacrosse Team Falls 9-8 to West Chester

WEST CHESTER—The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team lost to West Chester on Monday by a score of 9-8 in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) matchup.

The Huskies jumped out on top 1-0 just 1:14 into the game when Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) scored on a free position shot. West Chester answered though with five straight goals over an 18 minute stretch to take a 5-1 lead.

Bloomsburg came back with three straight goals of its own to narrow the gap to 5-4. Samantha King (Elkton, MD/North East) scored at 8:44, while Monica Novielli (West Chester/Rustin) hit the back of the net at 6:45 and Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) scored her second goal at 4:04. But the Golden Rams came back with two goals to close the half leading 7-4.

Bloomsburg started the second half with goals by Lyndsey Babilon (Boyertown/Boyertown) and Kelsey Metzler (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley), with Babilon assisting on Metzler's goal, to make it a 7-6 game with just over 20 minutes to play.

West Chester scored on a free position shot at 10:40 before Mazzi and Aubrey Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) scored back to back, with Tia Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) getting the assist on her sister Sam's goal, to make it an 8-8 game.

The Golden Rams scored what would turn out to be the game winning goal at 2:04 setting up a wild finish.

In the final minute West Chester had the ball, but was stripped by Bossert with 39 seconds to play. Sarah Bennett (Gilbertsville/Boyertown) for Bloomsburg scooped up the ground ball and raced down field in transition. However the Huskies were called for off-sides with 21 seconds to play. West Chester then ran out the clock to gain the win.

Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) finished with three goals, while Babilon, Metzler, King, Bossert and Novielli each added one. West Chester, 5-1,3-0 in the PSAC, got four goals from Tori Dugan.

Bloomsburg, 4-3,1-1 in the PSAC, hosts IUP on Friday at 4 p.m.
