Lacrosse Team Holds off IUP 14-13

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team defeated Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) on Friday by a score of 14-3 in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) matchup.

IUP jumped out on top 1-0 just 1:50 into the game. The Huskies would bring the score to 2-1 after Aubrey Bossert (Ambler, Wissahickon) scored at the 22:12 mark, followed by Tia Mazzie (Barto, Boyertown) five minutes later.

The Crimson Hawks came back with three straight goals of its own to narrow the gap to 4-2. Amber Shifflett (Pasadena, MD, Chesapeake) scored at 12:23, while Sam Mazzie (Barto, Boyertown) hit the back of the net at 9:51 on a free position shot. Gabrielle Lochetto (Phoenixville, Owen J. Roberts) would score off a pass from Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) at 8:10. But IUP came back with a goal to close the half tied at 5-5.

Bloomsburg started the second half with goals by Samantha King (Elkton, MD, North East) and Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) to make it a 7-5 game with just over 25 minutes to play.

IUP scored two more goals within three minutes. Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim, Springfield) would answer within 30 seconds and score for the Huskies. King then scored back to back to make it a 10-7 game.

The Crimson Hawks and the Huskies would go back and forth over the next 10 minutes, with King scoring another two goals and Tia Mazzie (Barto, Boyertown) adding to Bloomsburg's lead of 13-11.
King found the back of the net for her sixth goal of the day off a free position shot with less than three minutes to go in the game.

In the final two minutes, IUP would score off a free position shot to make the score 14-12. With 25 seconds left the Crimson Hawks would find the back of the net, making a close ending of 14-13.

King finished with six goals, while both the Mazzie sisters each added two. Canavan, Lochetto, Shifflet and Aubrey Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) would each add one. Sara Bates (Wading River, NY, Shoreham-Wading River) made six saves on the day.

Bloomsburg, 5-3, 2-1 in the PSAC, hosts Lock Haven on Saturday at 1 p.m.
