Lacrosse Team Rallies for Win over Mercyhurst

ERIE—The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team rallied from two goals down to beat eighth-ranked Mercyhurst College on Tuesday in PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) action.

The Lakers scored four of the game's first six goals with Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) scoring twice in a four minute stretch for the Huskies. Bloomsburg tied the game at 4-4 at the half on Samantha King (Elkton, MD/North East)'s back-to-back goals for the Huskies, with Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) assisting on the second, over the final 10 minutes of the period.

Mercyhurst opened the second half scoring two of the first three goals to take a 6-5 lead. The Huskies rallied and took their first lead of the game at 7-6 after Tia Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) and Sarah Bennett (Gilbertsville/Boyertown) found the back of the net just two minutes apart with 21:42 to play.

The lead for the Huskies was short-lived as Mercyhurst scored two goals just 1:06 apart to go back on top 8-7. That would be the final lead though for the Lakers as the Huskies scored four straight goals over a 10-minute stretch to grab control of the game.

Kelsey Metzler (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) started the rally with a goal with 14:24 to play to tie the game at 8-8. King, Metzler and Bennett all followed over the next nine minutes of action to put Bloomsburg on top 11-8.

Mercyhurst would get a goal back with 3:38 to play, however, that would be the game's final goal as the Huskies went on to post the conference road win.

King led the Huskies with three goals, while Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) added two goals and two assists with Bennett and Metzler also scoring twice. In goal Sara Bates (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) stopped four shots for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg goes to 6-4, 3-2 in the PSAC, with the win, while Mercyhurst falls to 7-3, 3-2 in the PSAC. The Huskies host Gannon on Saturday at 1 p.m.
