WALTHAM, Mass. – Bloomsburg goalie
Shelby Iezzi (Pottstown/Owen J. Roberts) saved a free-position shot from Bentley's Cori Geiger with five seconds remaining to preserve an 11-10 win over the Falcons Tuesday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse.
After a Bloomsburg clearing attempt from its own zone failed, Bentley took over possession with 18 seconds remaining. They ran the ball down into their attacking half, and Geiger drew a foul to setup the free-position attempt. Geiger shot low, but Iezzi made the save and smothered the ball as the Huskies hung on for the win.
Bloomsburg took an early 2-0 behind goals from
Sarah Bennett (Gilbertsville/Boyertown) and
Tia Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown). Geiger then scored three straight times to put the home team up 3-2 with 15:33 left in the half.
The Huskies then scored the next four goals over a five minute stretch to lead 6-3 before Bentley netted one with 17 seconds left in the half making it a 6-4 game at the break.
Bloomsburg opened the second half with back-to-back goals by
Kelsey Metzler (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) to put the Huskies on top 8-4 with 19:12 left to go.
The Falcons then scored four of the next five goals to narrow the gap to 9-8 with 12 minutes to play.
Tia Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) then scored off her sister Sam's assist to give the Huskies a two-goal cushion at 10-8 with 5:46 to go. Bentley came back with a goal with 3:56 to play for a 10-9 Bloomsburg lead.
The Mazzie combination of Sam to Tia clicked again with 2:48 to play giving Bloomsburg another two goal lead,11-9, with 2:48 left. Bentley then scored with 1:06 left setting up the game's exciting close.
Iezzi finished with 10 saves for the Huskies, now 2-1. Offensively,
Tia Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) scored four times, while
Kelsey Metzler (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) added three for the Huskies.
Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) led the Huskies with four goals.
Bloomsburg plays St. Andrews Presbyterian this Saturday at 3 p.m. in Maryland.
