BLOOMSBURG—The No. 14 ranked Bloomsburg University lacrosse team fell to No. 12 ranked Mercyhurst 13-10 in the Quarterfinals of the 2011 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Lacrosse Tournament on Tuesday at Sports Stadium.
The Lakers (13-5) started strong, getting a goal 4:28 into the game to take a quick 1-0 lead. The Huskies then responded almost a minute after when
Samantha King (Elkton, MD, North East) scored. Mercyhurst then found the back of the net at the 22:44 mark. King then came right back and scored off a pass from
Kelsey Schwan (Burnet Hills, Burnet Hills-Ballston Lake ) 5:44 later to even the score.
At 15:06 Mercyhurst would add another goal off a free position shot. The Huskies would then go on a 3-0 scoring streak within the next four minutes, with two coming from
Gabrielle Lochetto (Phoenixville, Owen J. Roberts) and
Sam Mazzie (Barto, Boyertown) adding one.
With less than four minutes left in the half, the Lakers would narrow the score to 5-4 after hitting a free position shot.
Sarah Bennett (Gilbertsville, Boyertown) would score a minute later, after taking a pass from
Kelsey Metzler (Schwenksville, Perkiomen Valley). Mercyhurst would add another goal with 2:00 minutes left, ending the half at 6-5.
Mercyhurst opened the second half with less than a minute in, making the score even at 6-6. With almost four minutes later Metzler would score off a free position shot. Mercyhurst would go on a 3-0 scoring streak over the next eight minutes, putting them up 9-7.
The Huskies would then score at the 15:24 mark when
Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) found the back of the net.
Tia Mazzie (Barto, Boyertown) then added a goal to even the score at 9-9 off a free position shot.
With less than 11 minutes left to play, the Lakers would the next two goals to put them up by two.
Aubrey Bossert (Ambler, Wissahickon) then found Schwan in front of the net, who added one for the Huskies.
Unable to get one past the Lakers goalkeeper Jenny Perkins, the Huskies would go scoreless for the next seven minutes of the game. Mercyhurst added two more to the scoreboard, ending the game 13-10.
King, Lochetto and
Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) would lead the Huskies with two goals a piece. Metzler, Schwan, Bennett and
Tia Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) would each also contribute a goal. In goal
Sara Bates (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) stopped six shots for the Huskies.
Mercyhurst improved to 13-5 with the win and will face West Chester in a semifinal game on Friday.
The Huskies finished the season fourth in the PSAC. They also scored 175 goals, led by King with 33 goals on the season.
