BLOOMSBURG--Bloomsburg University running back
Eddie Mateo (Bethlehem/Freedom) rushed for 201 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Huskies past Millersville University, 46-7. The Huskies offense totaled 498 yards of offense and scored 40 unanswered points en route to their first PSAC East win of the year.
The Marauders would start the game at their own 37 yard line. Millersville picked up a first down on the series but would be forced to punt the ball away as Bloomsburg started their drive at their own five yard line.
BU rushed the ball three straight plays for 22 yards to gain a first down on their first series. The Huskies would pick up another first down before
Pat Carey (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.) connected with
Kyle Fisher (Denver/Cocalico) for a 47 yard gain, putting Bloomsburg at the Millersville 12. A facemask penalty against Millersville on the pass brought the ball to the six yard line. From there the Huskies offense stalled leading to a Dan Fisher field goal from 20 yards out, putting BU up 3-0 with 5:56 to play in the first quarter.
The Marauder offense would be held in check again as the Huskies forced another punt on their second series.
Eddie Mateo (Bethlehem/Freedom) rushed for 32 yards on Bloomsburg's second series which concluded with a D. Fisher field goal from 38 yards out. BU now held a lead 6-0 with 10:46 to play in the half.
On Millersville's next possession they would find their rhythm on offense, driving the ball 68 yards on 12 plays for a one yard touchdown run by quarterback Dan Miller. Millersville would make good on the point after, giving the Marauders a 7-6 lead.
BU responded on their next possession as they marched 74 yards on four plays for a score of their own. The drive was capped by a 19 yard touchdown run by Mateo. D. Fisher connected on the point after to put the Huskies back on top 13-7. Mateo rushed for a total of 65 yards on the drive.
After a three-and-out by the Marauders, the Huskies took the ball over at their own 49 yard line with 1:04 to play in the half. An 11 yard completion to
Dylan Manni (Bensalem/Bensalem) and a seven yard rush by
Ryan Maggs (Beech Creek/Central Mountain) set up a Huskies first down with 21 seconds to play. From there Carey lofted a pass to the right side of the end zone where
Tyler Guise (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) grabbed the tipped pass for a touchdown. A bad snap and a fumbled hold would result in a failed PAT, giving the Huskies a 19-7 edge entering the half.
After two punts, one from Bloomsburg and another from Millersville, the Huskies put together another scoring drive that went for 69 yards on just five plays. Mateo capped the drive with a one yard rush that was set up by a 16 yard run by
Kareem Steplight (Philadelphia/Frankford). Dan Fisher connected on the point after, bringing the score to 26-7. On the drive Mateo broke out for a 34 yard gain, his longest of the day. The score would remain 26-7 as the third quarter came to a close.
With 12:18 remaining in the fourth quarter Mateo scored his third touchdown of the afternoon. His score would again come from one yard out. D. Fisher's PAT attempt would be blocked, bringing the score to 32-7 in favor of the Huskies.
Millersville would be forced to punt the ball away again on their next possession as the Huskies defense kept them out of scoring range. Bloomsburg started their next series on their own 20 but would stay there for long as Steplight got the ball three straight times and ran for 56 yards to the Millersville 24.
On a fourth and eight on the Millersville 25, the Huskies decided to go for it. Senior quarterback
Mike Wagner (Hershey/Hershey) dropped back on fourth down looking to go deep but his pass fell incomplete. Fortunately for the Huskies a pass interference penalty was called against the Marauders giving BU an automatic first down. Bloomsburg capitalized on the Marauder gift as Steplight ran the ball into the end zone from eight yards out. D. Fisher connected on his third PAT of the afternoon to put Bloomsburg ahead, 39-7 with 5:14 to play in the game.
Millersville would go three-and-out on their next series and punt the ball away from their own 35. BU's
DJ Robinson (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) scooped up the bouncing punt at his own 30 before carving the Marauder coverage team as he went for 70 yards and score. BU hit the point after to go up 46-7 with just 2:51 to play.
Neither team would score again as the game came to a close as Bloomsburg improved to 4-0 in the season and 1-0 in PSAC play.
Mateo ended the day with a career high 201 yards and three touchdowns.
Pat Carey (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp.) finished the day by going 11-of-16 for 176 yards and a touchdown throw. D. Fisher connected on both of his field goal attempts. He is now three away from tying the college record for career field goals made. Defensively
Justin Shirk (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin),
Dave Onorato (Hummelstown/Bishop McDevitt), and
Sean Clift (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic) each made seven tackles on the day.
Bloomsburg will put their perfect record on the line as they travel to take on the Warriors of East Stroudsburg in a PSAC East match-up on Saturday, October 1st. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
