BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University field hockey team saw its quest for a fifth consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship come to an end Tuesday afternoon as it dropped a 2-0 decision to Millersville University in a quarterfinal matchup at Sports Stadium.
The Huskies (14-5) and Marauders (13-6) played a back and forth first half with most of the action in the middle of the field. Each team got off two shots in the opening 35 minutes as the second half was going to determine who would move on to play Shippensburg in the semifinal game on Friday.
Millersville struck first in the 44th minute on its first opportunity of the half. After Bloomsburg controlled the ball in the Millersville half for the first nine minutes, the Marauders took control in transition and earned a penalty corner. Sarah Bomberger sent a strike towards goal from the top of the circle that was deflected in by Samantha Ruane to put Millersville on top.
Bloomsburg responded by continuing to push the ball forward and earn six penalty corners in the next ten minutes. It fired off four shots at MU goalkeeper Lauren Sotzin, but could not find the back of the cage.
Just over 15 minutes after the game's first goal, Millersville again was able to capitalize on its first attacking opportunity. Coming off a penalty corner, Bloomsburg junior goalkeeper
Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) made an initial save, but could not stop the rebounded shot by Katelyn Zapp as Bloomsburg faced a two-goal deficit with 11:21 to play.
Millersville needed just five shots Tuesday as it scored on two of its three attempts in the second half. Overall, the Huskies outshot the Marauders, 10-5, and held a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Bloomsburg had a chance to cut the deficit to one in the 68th minute as
Jenna DiSabatino (Mountain Top/Crestwood) was knocked down from behind to the right side of the goal and was awarded a penalty stroke.
Fellow senior
Amber Aulenbach (Fleetwood/Oley Valley) stepped to the line for the Huskies, as she was 3-for-5 on the season in penalty strokes. Aulenbach sent a shot to the left side, but hit the post and was denied BU's chance to get on the board.
The Huskies played to the final whistle as they were awarded a corner with no time remaining and still fought hard to try and give Bloomsburg a goal in what would be its final play of the game.
Sotzin tallied her seventh shutout of the season for the Marauders and made eight saves.
Bloomsburg now awaits the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, Oct. 29 to see if it rates in the top three in the South Region to move onto the NCAA playoffs. Bloomsburg entered the day ranked fourth in the region as the next rankings will come out on Wednesday, Oct. 24.
