Bloomsburg Field Hockey Falls in Overtime to Millersville

Box Score BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University field hockey team dropped a tough 1-0 overtime decision to Millersville University Tuesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action at Sports Stadium.

Millersville's Champayne Hess subbed in with less than three minutes remaining in the first sudden death overtime, took control of the ball and scored just 11 seconds later at the 82:37 mark, ending Tuesday night's nationally-ranked clash.

The Huskies (11-4 overall, 5-2 PSAC East) entered the game ranked fourth in the latest Penn Monto / National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II National Coaches Poll released earlier Tuesday afternoon.  The Marauders (10-5, 5-2) were rated sixth.

Both defenses played aggressive and did not commit many penalties in its defensive circle.  Most of the action was in the middle of the field with each team hoping to find an opportunity it could capitalize on.  With the field lessened to 7-on-7 action in overtime, the Marauders used their fresh legs to ultimately earn some satisfaction after suffering a similar 1-0 overtime loss at home earlier this season to the Huskies.

Bloomsburg's greatest chance to get on the board was shortly into the second half.  BU managed a pair of penalty corners in the first three and a half minutes and got two good shots at goal.  Brooke Simonovich (East Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) got her stick on a rebound after an Amber Aulenbach (Fleetwood/Oley Valley) shot, took a strike towards goal but was stopped by a diving Hess on the goal line to keep the game scoreless.

BU junior defender Jaclyn Beasley (Berlin, NJ/Eastern) made a crucial defensive play earlier in the overtime that kept the Huskies in the game.  Millersville intercepted a pass and found itself in a one-on-one situation.  Beasley kept her composure and poked the ball away from the Millersville forward to prevent a potential breakaway.

The entire Bloomsburg back line played a terrific game Tuesday night despite the setback.  Beasley, along with Gabriana Nisiotis, Meagen Hill (Gettysburg/Gettysburg), Cassie DiSabatino (Mountain Top/Crestwood), and Samantha Facciolla (Holland/Council Rock South) all played significant time and caused frustration in the Millersville attack by staying in front and not causing any fouls that would set up the Marauders with a penalty corner.

Bloomsburg goalkeeper Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) made three saves on Millersville's four shots on goal.  Millersville keeper Lauren Sotzin picked up her fifth shutout of the season and made eight saves.

The Huskies look ahead to the weekend when they travel to East Stroudsburg on Saturday, Oct. 13 for a PSAC East contest set to begin at 1 p.m.  Millersville, celebrating its first win over BU since 1989, will play West Chester on Saturday at 12 p.m.
