Two New Huskies Earn PSAC Cuts as Bloomsburg Defeats Dickinson

Ashley Bauer

BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University women's swimming team stayed hot and continued its march towards the conference meet in February with some qualifying swims in a 153-91 victory over Dickinson College Sunday afternoon at the Nelson Field House Pool.

The Huskies (4-4) had six new Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-qualifying swims, including two new swimmers, in an impressive victory over the Red Devils (2-4).  BU has now won its last two meets against Dickinson.

Senior Ashley Bauer (Temple/Muhlenberg) and junior Jess McGarry (Philadelphia/St. Hubert) sealed their places at the PSAC meet, turning in their first qualifying cuts of the season on Sunday.  Bauer was one of four Huskies to swim under the qualifying mark in the 200-free and finished her swim in 2:01.79.  Bauer has now qualified for PSAC's in the 200-free in each of the last three seasons.

McGarry swam her heart out in the 100-breast and used a great opening leg to finish .21 seconds under the qualifying mark.  McGarry finished third in 1:11.16.  Freshman Morgan Johnston (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) (1:09.98) won the 100-breast and was followed by junior Ali Luzik (Halifax/Halifax) (1:10.22).

Freshman Kaci McIlmoyle (Landenberg/Avon Grove) earned her team-leading sixth PSAC cut with an impressive swim in the 200-IM.  She finished nearly three seconds under the PSAC-mark with a 2:14.22 late in the meet.  McIlmoyle has now earned cuts in the 200-free, 500-free, 200-fly, 200-back, 200-IM, and 400-IM.

Senior Bridget Hilferty (Royersford/Perkiomen Valley) remained undefeated this season with a pair of victories in distance swims.  The returning All-American earned her fourth cut of the season with a two-second win in the 200-free (1:57.64).  She also won the 500-free in a time of 5:15.03.  Hilferty has PSAC cuts in the 200-, 500-, 1000-, and 1650-free.

Freshman Ashley Dix (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) won two events Sunday in sprint freestyle.  She won the 50-free in 25.48, and the 100-free in 54.64 over BU's Julia DeVincent (Ambler/Upper Dublin) (56.15) to achieve her third PSAC cut of the season.  The sprinter also has cuts in the 50- and 200-free.

Fellow freshman Meghan Gallagher (Aston/Sun Valley) was part of a PSAC-qualifying quartet in the 200-free with Hilferty, DeVincent, and Bauer. Her fourth-place finish in 2:01.59 marked her second cut of the season along with her 100-free time set earlier this season.

Freshman Alex Wheatley (Dresher/Upper Dublin) won two events to help give the Huskies their second win in its last three meets.  She won the 100- and 200-back in 1:00.91 and 2:16.48, respectively.  Wheatley, one of the newest swimmers on the BU swim team, continues to make her mark on the program with competitive swims every meet.

Overall, the women have earned a total of 31 PSAC-qualifying times and appear very strong looking forward.

Bloomsburg takes the next week off from competition before the Akron Invitational on Friday, Nov. 30.
