ERIE – The Bloomsburg University women's swimming team set a Gannon pool record and had a pair of new swimmers turn in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying teams in a 118.5-86.5 setback to Gannon University Friday night at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion.
Senior
Bridget Hilferty (Royersford/Perkiomen Valley) set the Gannon pool record in the 500-free for the Huskies (1-2 overall, 1-2 PSAC). She won the event in 5:11.88 as she already secured her spot at the conference championships in February in the event.
Juniors
Mollie Dawson (Coatesville/Coatesville) and
Ali Luzik (Halifax/Halifax) became Bloomsburg's 13th and 14th newest swimmers to set PSAC marks after just three meets. Dawson finished behind BU senior
Julia DeVincent (Ambler/Upper Dublin) in the 200-free in 2:02.50 as DeVincent turned in a time of 2:00.70.
Luzik and freshman
Morgan Johnston (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) finished within .11 seconds of each other in the 100-breast as both swimmers brought in points for the Huskies. Luzik swam in 1:11.16 as Bloomsburg proved it could swim with one of the top women's teams in the conference.
“Our girls came out tonight and swam stride-for-stride with a team that finished fourth at last year's PSAC's, and it was a very successful meet for us,” head coach
Stu Marvin said. “To come into a hostile environment after a six-hour bus trip and swim the way we did was huge for us.”
Hilferty, already a PSAC swimmer in the 1000-free, won yet another race in the event Friday night. She swam a 10:47.85 as BU swimmers had the top three finishes. Freshman
Alicia Frey (Ellicot City, MD/Wilde Lake) was second in 11:02.60, and sophomore
Alison Bradway (Tabernacle, NJ/Seneca) finished third in 11:06.28.
Frey also finished second in the 200-IM in 2:16.75, and has certainly impressed her peers just three collegiate meets into her career.
Bloomsburg took the top-two finishes in the 100-fly with a pair of previously-qualified seniors.
Madeline Barlow (Yardley/Pennsbury) and
Mel Redican (Dresher/Upper Dublin) finished first and second, respectively, and have turned into two of the top swimmers in the PSAC with competitive swims meet-after-meet.
Bloomsburg remains on the road this weekend as it prepares for a trio of conference swims on Saturday. Fans can expect another close and exciting meet on Saturday, Nov. 3 as BU goes up against Edinboro University, Kutztown University, and Mansfield University in a quad meet hosted by Edinboro beginning at 1 p.m. In last year's quad meet, the Huskies went a perfect 3-for-3 against the other three competing schools.
