BINGHAMTON, NY—In a night of back and forth lead changes the #19-ranked Binghamton University Bearcats narrowly edged the Bloomsburg University Huskies, 18-15, on Thursday night in a non-conference wrestling matchup. The team's split the night's 10 matches, but wins by major decision and technical fall in two of the bouts proved to be the difference.
The Huskies opened the match with a 10-5 win by
Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks) at 125 pounds. Boylan led 3-2 after one period, then got two more takedowns in the second period to lead 7-3 going to the final period. In the third period Boylan got one more takedown and with riding time posted the 10-5 victory.
At 133 pounds the Huskies extended their lead to 6-0 when
Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) scored a 12-6 win over Patrick Hunter. Wilcox posted four takedowns in the match and earned a point for riding time.
Binghamton got on the board at 141 pounds when Joe Bonaldi scored a 5-3 win over the Huskies
Derek Shingara (Shamokin/Shamokin). The Bearcats took a 7-6 lead when fourth-ranked Donnie Vinson scored a 14-1 win over
Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) at 149 pounds.
In the match-up of the night, Bloomsburg's
Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney), ranked ninth by Intermat, faced off with 10
th-ranked Justin Lister. The first period was low scoring with Lister getting a takedown for the only scoring of the period. In the second Hickman scored a late takedown, but Lister got a reversal with just 12 seconds left in the period to go back on top 4-2 heading to the third. The final period was wild though with Hickman scoring five takedowns in the period to pull out a win over Lister, 13-10, and putting the Huskies back on top 9-7.
At 165 pounds the Huskies
Chris Smith (Mineral, Va./Chancelor) lost to Matt Kaylor, 11-6, putting the hosts back on top 10-9. In the next match Bloomsburg regained the lead when
Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex), ranked 19
th, won by decision, 5-1, over Caleb Wallace. Dessino led 2-1 after one period with Wallace riding Dessino for the entire second period. In the third, Wallace chose down with Dessino picking up three back points to score the 5-1 victory and giving the Huskies a 12-10 lead.
At 184 pounds Binghamton once again regained the lead when #20 Nate Schiedel won by technical fall over
Sam Shirey (Beaver Springs/Midd-West) 20-3 (6:29) giving the Bearcats a 15-12 lead with two matches to go.
In a night of back and forth action the Huskies tied the score at 15-15 when
Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) won by decision, 7-4, setting up a final showdown at heavyweight.
In the showdown battle #18 Nick Gwiazdowski from Binghamton, scored a 12-5 win over the Huskies
Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) giving Binghamton the hard-fought win.
The Huskies, now 15-7 on the year, will close out their regular season on Feb. 16 at Lock Haven starting at 7 p.m.
