KUTZTOWN—
Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) scored six goals to lead the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team to a 17-6 victory over Kutztown University in the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) opener on Tuesday.
The Huskies grabbed control of the early scoring their first goal just 18 seconds into play when
Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) scored unassisted. Bloomsburg would add three more goals, one each from Mazzie,
Ashley Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) and
Samantha King (Elkton, MD/North East) in the first five and half minutes to lead 4-0.
After a Kutztown goal on a free position shot with 20 minutes to go before halftime, the Huskies added four more goals to lead 8-1. Mazzie scored two of the four goals with King and
Morgan Sherriff (Downingtown/Coatesville) adding one each.
Leading 9-2 at halftime, Bloomsburg scored the first two goals of the second half to lead 11-2. The Golden Bears the deficit to 11-5 with three straight goals before the Huskies iced the game with six consecutive goals over a nine-minute stretch .
Kutztown added one final goal with 4:21 to play to make the final 17-6.
Mazzie scored six times and added one assist to lead Bloomsburg, which overall had eight players score goals. Scoring twice each were King, Ashley and
Aubrey Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) and
Patrice Coleman (Media/Penncrest ). Falk added a goal and two assists for the Huskies.
In goal
Sara Bates (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) earned the win going the first 42 minutes and making seven saves.
Shelby Iezzi (Pottstown/Owen J. Roberts) saw action in the final 18 minutes of action.
Bloomsburg goes to 3-2 overall, 1-0 in the PSAC. Kutztown falls to 2-2, 0-1 in the PSAC. The Huskies West Chester on Sunday in a PSAC game at noon.
