BLOOMSBURG - The number 15 ranked Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team dropped a conference game to #15 Indiana of Pennsylvania (IUP) in a sudden death overtime, 18-17 on Friday afternoon on the road.
In the sudden death overtime IUP won the draw control. After a foul on Bloomsburg, IUP had two consecutive shots on goal, but Huskies goalie
Sara Bates (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) stopped both shots. Bloomsburg then took control of the ball and also took two shots on goal, stopped by the Crimson Hawks goalie Chelsey Hipp. IUP picked up a ground ball right before turning over the ball to the Huskies. The Huskies would also commit a turnover followed by the game-winning goal from IUP's Alexa Lodovici.
Bloomsburg began to score early just over three minutes into the game when
Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) scored unassisted. Sam King would add an unassisted goal eight seconds later for the Huskies, putting them up 2-0. IUP got on the board when Collen Berlin scored off an assist at 22:07, but the Huskies came back with a goal from King for a 3-1 lead.
Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield) would add another goal for the Huskies putting them ahead 4-1 at 17:43, followed by two goals from the Crimson Hawks cutting the lead to 4-3 with less then 15 minutes left in the first half.
Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) answered back with an unassisted goal with 13:23 left.
IUP tied up the score at 5-5 for the first time of the day after scoring two goals. Falk took back the lead for the Huskies with back-to-back goals putting Bloomsburg up 7-5 with under eight minutes in the first.
Alex Edwards would score for the Crimson Hawks off an assist from Corinne MIller, cutting Bloomsburgs lead back to one. With less than five minutes to go in the hal Falk would add an unassisted goal, followed by a goal from Mazzie with an assist from Canavan making the score 9-6.
Colleen Berlin of IUP would score an unassisted goal with less than 30 seconds to go making it a 9-7 game. IUP would commit a foul on Bloomsburg with 10 seconds left. King would end the half putting the Huskies up 10-7 off a free-position shot.
Bloomsburg opened up the second half with two unassisted goals from Falk and Canavan making the score 12-7. Stephanie Bianco scored for IUP off an assist from Paige Corathers with less than five minutes into the half. Mazzie would answer for the Huskies off a free-position shot, putting them 13-8.
The Crimson Hawks made it four straight goals and cutting the Huskies lead to just 13-12 with just over 15 minutes to go in regulation. Falk would come back and score another back-to-back goals for the Huskies making the score 15-12. IUP came back with three straight goals with 10 minutes left, ending the regulation period tied at 15-15.
In the first of the three overtime periods, Bloom struck first with a goal from
Patrice Coleman (Media/Penncrest ) off an assist from Falk. Bianco from IUP tied the score the back up with just over a minute to go, putting it at 16-16.
Lindsay Kupferschmidt (Royersford/Spring-Ford) then scored an unassisted goal with three seconds left in the first OT.
The Huskies would remain ahead through the second OT until Colleen Berlin would tie the score back up for IUP with less than a minute left forcing sudden death victory. With 13 seconds to go in the three-minute 3OT period, IUP would get the game-winning at 18-17 from Alexa Lodovici.
Falk finished with seven goals, while King and Mazzie each added three for the Huskies. Beth Glasshagel would have five goals to lead IUP.
Bates fought hard throughout the entire game recording 19 saves, with six in the three three-minute overtime periods.
Bloomsburg falls 4-3, 2-1 PSAC, while IUP improves to 6-1, 3-0 in the PSAC. The Huskies travel to Lock Haven on Saturday for a 3 pm start.
